A MESSAGE FROM MR. BEN PETERSELLI, PRINCIPAL
Glenbard West Community,
While the pace of things might be a little slower in the first two weeks of the semester as we reacclimate students to classroom routines and expectations, the third week resembles something closer to “full speed.” Grades are starting to pop up in PowerSchool, fall sports are off to a successful start, and clubs are hosting their kick-off meetings. As I walk the hallways during passing periods I see many enthusiastic students welcomed at their classroom doors by equally energetic staff members. It’s good to be back in action.
Our monthly newsletter is packed with valuable information—sometimes more than one can digest in a sitting—and so I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight a few upcoming opportunities in which parents and guardians can participate:
Open House is this Thursday, August 31st. The purpose of the evening is to provide you with a brief taste of the student experience—the teachers, their instructional philosophies, and our course curriculums. Our School Counseling Department is offering presentations for parents and guardians starting at 5:30 p.m., I’ll share a brief welcome in the auditorium at 6:10 p.m., and you can follow your student’s schedule starting at 6:30 p.m.
Homecoming week begins on Monday, September 11th.It’s early this year! There are so many fun ways for West families to get in on this tradition—including joining us for the pep rally and bonfire on Friday night, the pancake breakfast and parade on Saturday morning, and the athletic competitions and performances throughout the day.
West is hosting a Facility Planning Community Forum on Wednesday, September 27th. As part of our facility planning process, West is hosting a Facility Planning Community Forum to share information about West’s facility needs and the development of a new 10-year plan to address those needs. I encourage you to join us anytime between 5:30 and 8:00 p.m. for additional information and a building tour.
You can find more information on each of the above events in this month’s newsletter. Additionally, Glenbard West is very lucky to have several parent groups whose mission is to support our students and help us run programs throughout the school: Boosters, West Nation, Association of Music Parents, Friends of Forensics. I highly encourage you to get involved with one or more of these groups to whatever extent you are able.
Thank you for reading our newsletter. Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or concerns.
Go West!
Ben Peterselli

FACILITY PLANNING COMMUNITY FORUM
Learn about our long-range facility plan at community forum
As part of our facility planning process, Glenbard West will host a Facility Planning Community Forum to share information about our district-wide facility needs and development of a new 10-year facility plan to address those needs.
West’s Facility Planning Community Forum will be an open house format from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 27 at Glenbard West. Please plan to join us.
Glenbard’s four high schools, which range in age from 50 to 100 years old, continue to have numerous capital improvement needs. We are excited about developing a new 10-year facility plan. The plan will consider instructional best practice, safety and opportunities to connect and collaborate. Additional funding will be necessary to implement the new facility plan.
Learn more at this link.
Development of new 10-year facility plan
- Necessary warm/safe/dry projects (roofs, parking lots, boilers, cooling units, etc.)
- Safety and access upgrades (doors, hardware, entrances, access to administrative offices, etc.)
- Renovation of science labs and restrooms
- Wold Architects & Engineers and Performance Services, Inc. will maintain community asset.
Funding Sources
- Through sound fiscal stewardship, we continue budgeting dollars for the new ten-year master facility plan.
- Alternate revenue source (ARS) bonds will accelerate projects from the 2013 master facility plan, such as renovations to science labs and restrooms.
- Our ARS bonds are expiring, and we approved issuing a new series of ARS bonds that will total about $29 million of debt within our operating budgets.
- Will not increase the district’s tax rate
- A referendum is necessary to provide the remaining needed funds.
Key points:
- Facility improvements are necessary to support instructional environments.
- Without a large, one-time revenue source, some improvements are not possible.
- Construction costs will increase, but efficient borrowing yields a high return on investment.
- Instructional spaces demand attention, but lack of funding postpones improvements.
- D87 facilities – particularly entrances, cafeterias and collaboration spaces – are behind peer districts.
- In 2014, D87 committed to $100 million over 10 years; however, we exceeded that commitment by spending $154 million over the past 10 years ($35 million from 2014 referendum) while maintaining balanced budgets.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEANS' OFFICE
Ms. Lauren Meister, Mr. Nick Billone, Ms. Lillie Blackmon
And we’re off! Another school year has begun here at West, and the Dean’s Office has many new faces. Ms. Blackmon, Ms. Meister, and Mr. Billone are thrilled to become a part of the Hilltopper community!
We all know the old saying–the more things change, the more they stay the same. Even though there’s three new faces in the Dean’s Office, the expectations for our students are not changing and we’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate a few of those.
Attendance is the most important factor in a student’s success. Students need to be in school as much as possible and if they are going to miss school for an excused absence, please call your student in by 10:30 a.m.
Student IDs have bus and lunch information on them and are mandatory for them to be at school, participate in activities, and more. Please make sure your student comes to school with their ID at all times.
Most of all, do not hesitate to contact your student’s Dean if you have any questions or concerns.
SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Back Row: Tony Bergantino, Tad Keely, Jeremiah Wiencek, and Mike Neberz
Front Row: Peggy Mirka, Beatriz de Ferreira, Chris Gladish, Kate Culloton, Natalie Rubino, Rhiannon Sieck, and Lissete Ochoa
Senior year is an exciting time, all those years of hard work culminating in the postsecondary decision making process! We also understand the entire postsecondary/college application process can be a stressful one. Between visits, financial considerations, discussions on the right fit, and pressure put on you by the colleges themselves trying to get you to apply earlier every year, things can easily become overwhelming. This process can be especially challenging for many of our seniors who may be the first in their family to apply to college. To minimize your worries, West’s School Counselors are here to guide all seniors and their families along the way. The School Counseling department is in the process of updating a Senior Video Series to help guide them and families throughout each step of the way.
The first step in the college application process is all seniors and their parents completing the “Counselor Recommendation Form” and “Parent Input Form” respectively on SchooLinks (students can login with Google and their Glenbard credentials). This valuable information will help support seniors’ letters of recommendation. Please refer to the School Counseling Senior Family Letter we sent home and always feel free to reach out to your child’s School Counselor with any questions.
The second step will be the “senior convo” videos being played during Glenbard Hour on August 28 to discuss the college application process. We believe this information is also important for parents, so there will be a presentation the evening of Open House on August 31 to help guide families through the application process as well. After the senior convo and parent presentations, counselors will be offering college application workshops through Glenbard Hour support days and meeting with all seniors in small groups (and individually as needed), fully preparing all seniors for the major November 1st deadline. Stay tuned to your child’s SchooLinks account, future newsletters, and emails for additional information.

DR. DAVID LARSON, SUPERINTENDENT
Superintendent outlines ways to support students
The start of a new school year is filled with limitless possibilities and new learning opportunities. There are a variety of ways families can support and guide students throughout the year.
Here are a few ways to support students:
Provide support at home
- Help your teen get organized
- Share time management tips
- Encourage good study habits
- Discuss assignments
- Be interested
- Offer specific praise for hard work
- Watch for frustration
- Establish a regular time for homework
- Choose a place to do homework and remove distractions
- Encourage your student to connect to school by getting involved in a sport, club or activity.
Tap into resources, opportunities of Glenbard Hour
The Glenbard Hour is a feature of our new school day schedule. During the twice weekly Glenbard Hour, every teacher and every student will be involved in making choices; seeking help; getting involved in physical activities; learning new concepts and gaining new skills. This dedicated time each week will allow students to access their teachers for the support they need to experience academic success. It also will reduce the need for students to arrive early or stay after school to seek assistance.
Encourage your student to tap into the many resources and opportunities available through the Glenbard Hour each week.
Take advantage of free Glenbard Parent Series events
We are so fortunate to have the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families, which provides families with support and tips from national parenting experts and local educators. Each week, GPS speakers discuss a range of topics that all families face as teens make their way through adolescence to adulthood. Check out the list of free GPS programs and get the webinar links at Glenbardgps.org.
We partner with families to support students and prepare them for a bright future brimming with possibilities.
THE GLEN BARD
Our school newspaper, the Glen Bard, offers students a platform to share their passions in writing, art, film, and photography. Here, students share ideas and work together to provide relevant and entertaining information about the school, current events, and pop culture. Their most up-to-date information can be found on their link below!
SIGN UP FOR GLENBARD NEWS
You can keep up with Glenbard information throughout the year by signing up for Glenbard News, our district-wide enewsletter, at this link.
Each week, you will receive district-wide news about students’ achievements in school-sponsored activities; upcoming events; fund-raisers; school board information and more.
