ATTENDANCE MATTERS
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
We are looking forward to a successful year at Larsen Middle School. The staff at Larsen is here to support your student on their learning journey. I will share attendance information and data in my upcoming letters because attendance matters.
Strong attendance has a proven impact on school success. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions, can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing subjects and ninth-graders dropping out of high school.

Student ID's
Everyone in U-46 must wear an ID. Students are no different in Middle School. Click here for our ID policy and what happens if a student forgets theirs.
CELL PHONE POLICY
CELL PHONES SHOULD BE AWAY FOR THE DAY.
I will continue to share this message throughout the year as it will take community support to be consistent with the Away for the Day policy.
Science supports an "Away For The Day" policy. When students do not have the freedom of accessing their phones during school hours, they are more engaged socially and academically. You can read more about the benefits HERE.
©2022 AWAY FOR THE DAY
All middle schools in the district will be following the district guidelines of "AWAY FOR THE DAY" for cell phone usage. Students will not be allowed to use their cell phones during the school day, including during lunch, in the locker room or bathrooms. These district-wide middle school guidelines support classroom learning and improved culture and climate efforts for all middle school students in order to minimize distractions and help teachers create and manage a classroom and school environment conducive to learning, discussion and collaboration. It also helps protect students against bullying and/or inappropriate social media use during school hours, which are often exacerbated by cell phone access.
In accordance with our secondary cell phone guidelines, students are expected to put their silenced or powered-off cell phone in their locker upon arriving at school. Our intention is to help students create better habits when in learning environments. If students are unable to keep devices out of sight and in their lockers, teachers may provide a warning and remind/ask their students to put the phone away in their lockers or cell phone holders until the end of the period. If students do not comply and continue to engage in electronic device misuse, progressive discipline procedures will be followed. This may include, but is not limited to, the following consequences: having the student turn over his/her phone to the main office for parent pick up, or issuance of referrals resulting in detentions and other discipline-related interventions.
THIS INCLUDES AIRPODS/EARBUDS.
Parents - If you need to get a hold of your student during the day, please call the main office and we will either relay your message or bring your student to the main office for you to speak to them directly.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Students can choose clothing that makes them feel comfortable and safe, as long as it complies with the following guidelines:

- Covers all appropriate areas at all times. Appropriate areas include: stomach, chest and sides (both male and female) and butt/pelvic/upper thigh areas.
- Items such as tank tops, sleeveless shirts, any type of shorts, coats, jackets, etc. are all allowed provided they adhere to #2 of this sections (low backs are not a problem).
- Jewelry is allowed, unless it becomes a safety concern.
- Hats, hoods, and other types of head coverings are not allowed unless required for religious or medical purposes.
- Footwear must be work for health reasons (cannot go shoeless).
PARENT NOTIFICATION OF TARDIES
To assist parents to manage their child's attendance/tardies School District U-46 has enabled a district-wide function to allow parents to be notified when a tardy is entered in Infinite Campus. Parents must turn this function on to receive notifications. To turn this function on, please follow the steps below.
- Before you log in, mark Stay Logged In To Receive Notifications.
- After logging in, click the User Menu in the top right and then click Settings and Notification Settings.
- From there indicate which types of notifications you'd like to receive and set the threshold for notifications. For example, indicate if you only want to receive Assignment notifications if the score is below 70%.
- Click Save.
ID's
To ensure safety, all U-46 students must wear a student ID. Larsen students will be given a brand new student ID and Larsen lanyard on the first day of school in 1st period. Students must wear the ID (w/the Larsen lanyard) to enter the building every day. Students must have their picture visible on their ID at all times. They may not cover or alter their ID in any way. The ID must remain on at all times while in the building, including after-school events and activities.
