Month of the Military Child
When we return from break, it will be April and that is the Month of the Military Child. It recognizes the unique challenges faced by children who grow up in families whose parents serve in our nation’s armed forces. Among the activities we are holding throughout the month include having students from military families lead our school in our daily Pledge of Allegiance. In addition, since purple is the color of the military child, we invite all of our students to wear purple on Thursdays throughout the month of April.

Parent Night: “Supporting Teens in Reducing Their Stress”
Matt Bellace, PhD will be presenting to parents on the evening of April 24th at 6:30pm in the Main Café on the topic of “Supporting Teens in Reducing Their Stress”.
Dr. Bellace is a Clinical Psychologist, Author, and Stand Up Comedian.
- Learn coping skills, including meditation, reframing disappointment and modeling natural highs.
- Gain a better understanding of how adolescent brain development, screentime, sleep deprivation and substance abuse impact mental health.
- Learn how to more effectively communicate with teens.
This event is open to ALL parents, guardians, and caregivers.
Clinical Corner
School Refusal/Anxiety Part 2
The article on school refusal mentioned in the last Clinical Corner and included at the end here, suggests to first try to understand the issue from your teen’s point of view. Also, to have them rate each part of the school day to see where they are most uncomfortable. Helping your child see what they can problem solve about can also help them regain some control over the situation. No matter what the issue is, the article strongly supports that the child continues going to school as you are trying to resolve the issue. It builds their confidence and resilience and it will be easier for them to return if they haven’t been out too long.
Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to the school to let them know what is going on. Teachers and administrators can often brainstorm and help lighten the stress your child is feeling. Lastly, to get more support for your child and yourself, talking to a counselor can give you both strategies to work on managing all the feelings that your child is experiencing.
The article has more information than I can include here. To read it in its entirety, click here.
