PARENT CORNER: HELPING OUR KIDS STAY FOCUSED DURING THE HOLIDAYS
As we approach the joyous holiday season, it's natural for our middle school students to become excited about the festivities, family gatherings, and the promise of a well-deserved break. However, amidst the cheer, it's essential to guide our teens in maintaining their focus and goal-oriented mindset towards their studies. Here are some tips to help your middle schooler stay on track during this festive season:
1. Establish Clear Goals Together
Sit down with your teen and discuss their academic goals for the holiday season. Whether it's completing a specific project, catching up on assignments, or improving in a particular subject, having clear objectives will give them a sense of purpose.
2. Create a Realistic Schedule
Encourage your teen to create a realistic study schedule that accommodates holiday activities. Break down tasks into manageable chunks and allocate specific times for studying. This way, they can enjoy the festivities without feeling overwhelmed by their academic responsibilities.
3. Designate a Productive Study Space
We have encouraged this practice over and over in our Parent Corner news articles, because it is so important for your teen to have their own space for studying! Help your teen create a dedicated study space that is free from distractions and has the required materials (don't forget a spot to charge that iPad each night). Whether it's a quiet corner in their room or a shared family study area, having a designated space can enhance concentration and productivity.
4. Encourage Time Management Skills
Teach your teen the importance of effective time management. Show them how to prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and allocate time for breaks. These skills will not only benefit them during the holiday season but will be valuable throughout their academic journey.
5. Balance Leisure and Academics
It's crucial to strike a balance between leisure and academics. Encourage your teen to enjoy the holiday season while also emphasizing the importance of fulfilling their academic responsibilities. Reinforce the idea that a well-deserved break is more enjoyable when they've accomplished their goals.
6. Be Supportive and Communicative
Let your teen know that you are there to support them. Be open to discussing their concerns, and offer assistance when needed. Regular communication fosters a sense of trust and helps you stay informed about their academic progress.
7. Lead by Example
Demonstrate the importance of maintaining focus and commitment by setting an example. Share your own strategies for staying organized and goal-oriented, reinforcing that learning is a lifelong journey that continues even during the holiday season.
While the holiday season is a time for celebration, it's essential to guide our middle school students in maintaining their academic focus. By establishing clear goals, creating a realistic schedule, and fostering effective time management skills, we can help them strike a balance between academics and holiday festivities. Together, let's empower our teens to make the most of this season while staying on the path to academic success.
Wishing you and your family a joyful holiday season! Happy Thanksgiving!

A COOL THING HAPPENED IN CLASS...
*Ms. Updike's classes read an informational piece about how the Macy's parade started because Macy's wanted to kick off the holiday season with a parade. Students read the story "Balloons over Broadway," and compared the article and the story. Students then created their own balloon and had their own parade during 7th period on Friday! Ms. Updike says she is always amazed because students created so many wonderful designs - globe, cat, fish, ghost, peacock, and a flower - out of very limited supplies! SO CREATIVE!
*Ms. Bair's choir classes teamed up with Ms. Deavers, our Technology Integration Specialist, to use GarageBand on the iPad to create their own vocal warm-up tracks. They had to create 3 measures of music and set background beats & tracks to accompany their melodies. They will use these songs to warm up for the rest of the school year! Ms. Bair is also super proud of her Northern Lights students for how hard they have been working in their rehearsals!
*Ms. Mills began a new library lesson this week about how to judge websites correctly. Students had to look up the websites she provided and decide if they were trustworthy or not and why. If students were then able to open a breakout box, their hypothesis was correct and they all got a reward! Thanks for making media literacy so fun, Ms. Mills!
*Ms. Long's students created a Mexcian feast this week! They made torillas from scratch and topped them with a delicious medley of meat, homemade salsa, and street corn! They also provided staff with a pre-Thanksgiving treat with charcuterie boxes on Friday. YUM!
*Ms. Neff would like to congratulate the following 6th grade students who won the IXL challenge!
READING - 1st place: Ayden Burrow - 2nd place: Elizabeth Bowlin - 3rd place: Andrew Bixler
Mr. Malcolm's 2nd period class won overall!
MATH - 1st place: Devlin Lewis - 2nd place: Elizabeth Bowlin - 3rd place: Elaina Sines
Ms. Wood's 7th period class won overall!
