Teachers can help students strengthen their brain's executive function with "workouts" in which they practice pausing, prioritizing, improving their working memory, and mapping their options. Children and youth can be taught to develop their executive functioning to become more successful self-directed learners. Ms. V, the principal of an alternative school opens up about the challenges and rewards of shepherding at-risk kids to graduation. She has heard countless stories of personal or familial alcohol or drug addiction, chronic truancy, and physical and sexual abuse from her 121 at-risk students. Over 90 percent of the school’s students live below the poverty line; most have a history of serious disciplinary issues and have fallen too far behind at traditional schools to catch up.
