Clearspring Middle School
December 2017
Principal's Message
December has arrived! As always, school calendars fill up with concert practices and concerts, families become busy with shopping and family gatherings, and then there is the excitement of Christmas and the holidays that go along with that. And in the midst of all of that, we expect that we will continue learning at school.
We have just completed a month of learning about gratitude. Our allies, (two students from each classroom) planned activities for all of us at school to consider things for which we are grateful. We witnessed loads of gratitude, and ended the month with a celebration of gratitude by eating gratitude cake! Thanks to our allies and their teacher advisors for a wonderful month.
At Clearspring Middle School, we like to remind ourselves and our community of our promise from time to time.
WE PROMISE…
To teach students, not subjects
To believe the best, hope for the best, and cheer for the best in every person
To make learning engaging
To be proactive rather than reactive
To teach in ways that respond to our students’ needs
To meet students where they are
To keep in mind that learning is a process that takes time and commitment
To keep relationships at the core of how we work together
To help each student feel valued
To create an atmosphere that welcomes every student to belong
To dream big and to work hard
To challenge all students to learn at high levels
While we don’t always get it right, we are committed to this as our approach to building a strong school community. We have just completed parent-teacher conferences and report cards, which link to our commitment. As you know, our parent-teacher conferences take place before our report cards come out. One of our goals when we made that change was to shift our conversations toward learning rather than marks alone. Another goal is to provide a little more time for learning before the report card mark needs to be determined. Our hope is that as our work together with parents and students will result in high levels of learning for each student.
I want to thank all the parents of our school for your support. Our school is characterized by students who take their learning seriously and work hard, and also enjoy their work. When we have problems, we are generally able to work together to find resolutions. That is not to be taken for granted. We appreciate the opportunity to work with parents to address problem areas, so thank you.
As we look forward to the rest of this month, we know it will be busy, and maybe stressful, for most families. It is our hope that December can be a month of learning, and that the preparations leading up to Christmas can be filled with joy for everyone in the CMS family.
CMS Concerts
Our Grade 7 & 8 Band Concert will take place on Thursday, December 7th @ 7:00pm in the CMS Gym. Students need to be here at 6:40pm.
Our Grade 5 Christmas Concert will take place on December 20th. We look forward to having ALL our Grade 5 students participating in the concert. It has always been a great celebration, and I am sure it will be that again.
Parking and Pick Up at CMS
We know that our school road design presents some difficult challenges. In general, if you are coming to school during the day, PARKING is available in the parking lot in front of the school or in the staff and visitor parking lot. If you are picking up a student, that is done at the front of the school. AVOID the bus loop, since that is also serving as a play area while we wait for our grass to grow.
Please be aware that we share the pick up space with KinderKorner Daycare, and they have a section of the pick up driveway dedicated for daycare pick up.
When we have special events, we have parking attendants who do a great job of assisting our guests with parking. Watch for their traffic vests and light wands.
Last Day Schedule
On the last day of school before Christmas, our school will celebrate the talents of our students in our 6th Annual Talent Show. The show will take place on December 22 in the morning. In the afternoon, each of our Grade Level Neighbourhoods has planned some activities to do together, and most classes will spend some time with just their own classmates. This is a good day to spend together before we begin the Christmas holiday.
Perfect Attendance at CMS
Congratulations to these 4 students, they won ONE FREE HOT LUNCH, A CMS water bottle and a pair of CMS Shoe laces.
Winter Reminders
Winter Clothing
Please make sure that your child is dressed for our cold Mani-snowba weather. Toques, mittens, scarves, boots and ski pants are all important for kids to stay dry and warm! We Students will be kept inside for indoor recess when the temperature drops below -28 (windchill).
Bus Delays and Storm Days
The HSD website contains information regarding bus delays (http://hsd.ca/services/transportation/bus-delay-bulletins/). All school buses that are late for whatever reason will be posted on this site. The Bus Transportation Department does not call individual homes when buses are cancelled or running late.
Extreme Hazardous Weather
Schools will close when weather and road conditions in Hanover School Division are such that it is not advisable to transport students via school buses. If weather worsens after the school day has started (creating unsafe driving conditions that necessitate cancelling bus service for the return trip home), students will remain in school until other arrangements can be made. Buses will not be sent out early.
Extreme Cold Weather
Schools will be closed for cold weather reasons when it’s too cold for students to be exposed to the elements for even a short period of time.
Schools will close for cold weather reasons when the temperatures are:
-35 degrees Celsius or colder, WITH a windchill of -45 degrees Celsius or colder.
Consideration to close schools may also be given if either the temperature or the wind chill significantly surpasses these levels, or there are other extenuating circumstances as determined by the Superintendent and Director of Transportation.
Parent Choice
During extreme weather (when schools are required to be kept open according to policy), parents may use their discretion to keep children at home if they feel their children’s safety may be compromised in any way. Parents choosing to keep children at home due to weather safety concerns, should inform the school as per regular absence procedures.
Parent Notification
In the case of school closures or the cancellation of bus service, parents will receive a phone message from the division’s information call system. Notice will also be made between the hours of 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. on a variety of local and provincial media outlets (AM 1250, Mix 96.7, CJOB, SteinbachOnline.com, and TheCarillon.com), including the HSD Twitter account at @HanoverSD. Information on school closures, or bus delays/cancellations will also be posted at HSD.ca.
