HET September 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to Helen E. Taylor School to the 2022/2023 school year!!

Welcome back to our returning HET families and a huge welcome to those families new to our school this year. I hope everyone took the time to spend the summer relaxing and reconnecting with family and friends. We have already had a very exciting start to our new school year including our welcome week court activities. Students participated in some fun games outside in the beautiful weather. We have also started up with our sports teams with volleyball already well underway.

We have some wonderful new additions to our staff and I would like to recognize Ms. Balisky, Mrs. Rinehart, and Miss Tetreau to our teaching staff, along with Mrs. MacAlister as our new Assistant Principal! I would also like to welcome our new Educational Assistants joining our team this year, Mrs. Bain and Ms. Coupland!

We have some amazing whole school activities planned for the year ahead along with some family fun nights that will be happening. Our teachers are creating amazing lessons and activities that will challenge our students and build their success. I look forward to all of the wonderful things that will be happening at our school this year and invite you to join us for all the wonderful events that will take place throughout the year.

Hello HET!

My name is Allicia MacAlister and I am so excited to be here! I have been teaching for the last 11 years at Hythe Regional School. I am originally from Beaverlodge but have lived in the Pipestone area with my husband and daughter for the past 7 years. At HET, I am teaching grade 9 Social Studies, Grade 7 & 9 PE, as well as being this year's Assistant Principal. I am really looking forward to getting to know the students and their families, as well as spending more time in the community! Here is to a great year!

Thank you to everyone who came to our Open House and stuck around for our first School Council meeting. We had a great turn out!! Please keep coming to our meetings; there are only 4 more this year! We would love to see some Elementary parents there, too!!

We are so excited to announce our Hot Lunch program is BACK!! Our first lunch will be next week so please get your order and payment in!! We use Munch a Lunch, an online order & payment site. You will need to set up an account (if you don't already have one) and order & pay (at the same time) with a credit card.

HET has a closed campus policy. This means that your child can not leave the school without you signing him/her out, in person. You can appoint another adult to do so, please call the office and let us know who that may be.

If you are sending your child to school with a cell phone, our expectations are:

Elementary students--no phones (unless teacher approved).

Junior high students--phones ONLY at breaks 11:25-12:05 &

1:25-2:05 (unless teacher approved).

If your child does not have a lock on his/her locker, the phone can be locked in the offfice.

If you need to get in touch with your child, please call the office (780) 766-9103.

Please note our days off for the 2022/23 school year.

Reminder...our school MAY have different days off than other schools in or outside of our district.

If your child will be absent from school, please phone the office (780) 766-9103 or email barbaramurphy@pwpsd.ca or your child's teacher. Our automated call home goes out at

9:05 AM so if you have not notified us prior to that, you will receive a call.

We will be doing a run/walk to honour Terry Fox on Friday, Septmeber 23. Please have your child's Returning Student Demographic Form completed in order for him/her to leave school grounds.

Thank you to so many of our parents/guardians who have already completed their forms. These are emailed out to the "primary" contact on file, to make any changes to contact information, to update any medical needs, to give permission to leave school property on a field trip, to "register" your child for the new academic year. Please check your Inbox, Spam or All Mail for an email from "REGISTRATION" with "Helen E. Taylor School Returning Student Demographic Form for...". If we do not have your latest email or if you are unable to find this email, please contact our office for assistance.

We would love to see parents join our HET School Council. Please read the attachment--you may be surprised to know what the role of a School Council is. Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting!

We have already started our Junior High Volleyball program this year! Thank you to Mrs. Westad and Miss Tetreau for coaching our teams. GO Knights!!

Friday, September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This comes in the wake of discovering the remains of more than 1,300 Indigenous children in unmarked graves at former residential schools since May of last year. Wear orange to show your support, recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada. We will be honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday, September 29 with some school activites. Check to see what your community is doing to honour this day.
