Curriculum and Assessment Updates
At Green Meadow, our Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 students participate in a variety of evidenced-based assessments that provide data and inform instruction. Teachers will be speaking with families about assessment data during conferences the week of October 27. Here is a summary of the assessments your child may participate in and how each assessment is used:
Earlybird Learning Early Literacy Screening Tool
This assessment is given to Kindergarten and Grade 1 students at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. It is a game-based assessment that measures a students skill level and growth in English across phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle (phonics), oral language fluency, vocabulary, and rapid-naming speed. The assessment identifies areas that could contribute to difficulty with reading. Evidence-based resources are available through Earlybird Learning to support whole class and small group instruction to support students with identified areas. Teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators analyze the data from this assessment and identify trends and areas of instructional need.
mClass/DIBELS8
mClass is a platform that provides one-minute fluency probes based on the DIBELS8 (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment. The assessment is available in English and Spanish. It is given to all of our Spanish Immersion students in both languages, and our Grade 2 and Grade 3 students in English. It measures phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle (phonics), and fluency. The data is analyzed by teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators to identify trends and areas of instructional need. mClass provides teachers with evidence-based instructional resources and recommended groupings. Students are given this assessment at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and the end of the year.
MAP Growth Literacy Assessment
MAP Growth ELA (English) and SLA (Spanish) is new to the district this year. This benchmark assessment is given to students in Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Students are assessed on their knowledge of literature and informational text, language use and writing, and vocabulary use and functions in relation to the ELA standards. Grade 1 students are also assessed on foundational skills. MAP Growth is given at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and end of the year. The data is analyzed by teachers, coaches, and administrators to identify instructional needs and guide planning and differentiation.
Lexia Learning CORE 5
Lexia Learning is a progress-monitoring adaptive program that is based in Science of Reading research and evidence. Students in Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 use the systematic, personalized program to reinforce foundational literacy skills. Teachers use the data to plan for small group instruction and review important skills using evidence-based resources that are personalized to the students in their class.
MAP Growth Math Assessment
MAP Growth Math is a benchmark assessment that is new to the district this year. It is given in Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Spanish Immersion students in these grades take this assessment in Spanish. Students are assessed in Number and Operations, Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry in relation to the math standards. MAP Growth is given at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and end of the year. The data is analyzed by teachers, coaches, and administrators to identify instructional needs and guide planning and differentiation. This year this data is also being used to inform the MPS Math Curriculum Review.
Reflex Math
Reflex Math is a progressing monitoring program that measures students' mathematical fluency. It is used in Grade 2 and Grade 3. It is an adaptive, personalized system for mastering basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Professional Development Update
On October 6, administrators, teachers, counselors, and service providers participated in Mental Health First Aid Training. This program focuses on recognizing and supporting signs of mental health challenges and substance abuse through skills-based training. Staff practiced strategies for having conversations about mental health and substance abuse concerns. The training reviewed local and state resources for supporting students and families experiencing these challenges.
Paraprofessional staff received this training last May. They participated in CPR training with the Maynard Fire Department, and technology training with district staff.
On September 22, all staff participated in Overdose Response Training. Staff members were trained on how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and administer the opioid overdose recovery drug Naloxone (NARCAN). This training was part of a grant to support community outreach.
Purple Pinky Day - Week of October 23 - 27
Tuesday October 24th is World Polio Day. Rotary International has been working to eliminate Polio for the past 35 years and the world has been getting very close to that goal with Polio now endemic in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Maynard Public Schools has partnered with Middlesex Savings Bank, and our local Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley as we assist with the drive to end Polio once and for all.
Purple Pinky Day is a fundraiser where families across the United States give $1.00, or whatever they think is best, to pay for inoculating kids in the developing countries where Polio still exists. Best of all, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation matches $2 for every $1 raised so your money will go even farther. It costs $1 to inoculate 1 child. Your dollar, coupled with the matching funds, will help ensure 3 children are protected against Polio.
100% of the funds collected here in Maynard will be donated to the campaign to eradicate Polio.
Costume Drive - MHS Leaders of Change
You can donate clean, used costumes to be redistributed by the Maynard High School Leaders of Change Club. There is a box in the lobby of Green Meadow for all donations. Donations will be collected through October 20. Questions? Please contact hannahp2025@gmail.com or awisely07@gmail.com.
