Tip of the Month - Reading!
Three Tips To Encourage Reading!
1. Read it again and again.
Encourage your child to read familiar books. If your child wants to take the same book out of the library for the 100th time, that’s just fine. Re-reading helps build speed and accuracy. And that can help build confidence for kids who learn and think differently.
2. Make reading real.
Connect what your child reads with what’s happening in real life. For example, if you’re reading a story about basketball, ask questions about when your child learned to shoot hoops and how similar it was to the kids’ experience in the story.
You can also look for follow-up activities that make stories come to life. If the book references kites, ask your child to brainstorm fun kite-related activities, like how to make a kite. Hands-on activities like these can keep kids engaged with the topic.
3. Don’t leave home without something to read.
Bring along a kid-friendly book or magazine any time you know your child will have to wait in a doctor’s office, at the DMV, or anywhere else. Stories can help keep your child occupied. And the experience will show that you can always fit in time to read.
Students who are in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will be bringing books home to read! If you have a younger child, visit the public library to check books out for free. It is located at 1001 N. 2nd Avenue! If you can’t make it to the library, below are a fewlinks to find free online books in english and spanish!

A word from Mrs. Amaro~
I will be using a research based social emotional learning program designed to improve children's social emotional skills. The program consists of four units that cover the following:
1. Growth Mindset & Goal Setting- Children will focus on how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal setting strategies to their social and academic life.
2. Emotion Management- Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use strategies- including stress management for older students- to calm strong emotions.
3. Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others, and learn important skills to build and maintain relationships.
4. Problem-solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP process:
S: Say the problem
T: Think of Solutions
E: Explore the outcomes
P: Pick a solution
I will send home information throughout the year to help reinforce the activities being taught at school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amaro
A note from the library~
It’s been so great seeing eager faces back in the library. Everyone has been making some wonderful book choices! Studies show that the more choice children have in what they read the more time they will spend reading. Please be sure to encourage your children to read at home everyday, or sit and read with them and make it family time.
We have some great new books that they are getting to choose from. These books came from money we earned from our book fair last winter. I can’t wait for them to get read!

Coaches Corner!
In PE we have been working on safety procedures and basic gym expectations. The kids have learned that they always need to be respectful of others, themselves, equipment, and the gymnasium and have been doing a great job! We have also discussed playground safety, crosswalk/sidewalk safety, and parking lot safety. Students are learning to look both ways and how to use the crosswalk so they can stay safe when crossing a street. Even though they are learning some of these things to help keep them safe, we remind them that staying with an adult or older sibling when crossing is also a good idea.

A word from Mrs. Panzer.
Hello, Central Families! I am so happy to be here at Central! Our families, students, and staff are the best! I look forward to serving all of you this year.
Below are some items of information.
*We appreciate you keeping the drop off and pick-up lane in front of the school clear. Please remember, if you need to come into the school, please park in the parking lot.
*If you are a new visitor to the school, please bring your ID with you. We scan all of the IDs of new visitors. This is one of many ways we keep students and staff safe.
*Our teachers are working so hard to teach children so many wonderful things. We need your help in making sure they are well rested and ready to learn. Please be sure your children are getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night.
*If your family is on reduced pay or full pay meals, we appreciate all of you keeping your meal accounts up to date since meals are no longer free for everyone this year.
*We are having our very first Site Council meeting for the year on September 2. It is from 8:00 am to 9:00 am here at Central. We would love for you to join us!
*Our staff developed a mission statement that will guide us for this year. It is listed below. I think it’s a wonderful mission statement for who we are here at Central!
Central Elementary is committed to providing an inclusive, welcoming, and positive environment where everyone continues to grow socially, emotionally, and academically to positively impact our community and society as a whole.
