ICAP conferences on January 23rd and 30th
Our high school staff is always dedicated to the continued growth of students, particularly when it comes to their future career success. For this reason, the high school will hold Individual Career and Academic Planning (ICAP) conferences on January 23rd and January 30th. An email with more information on the specific details of these conferences will be sent in the next couple of days. It is important for families to have discussions focused on career and academic goals, and these conferences will begin those conversations with your family. The ICAP planning team is working hard, taking into account parent and student feedback from last year’s conferences to make these conferences valuable for all stakeholders. The students will lead these conferences, so we ask that you please bring your student(s) to lead this discussion. There will also be information on registering for future classes to take home.
**We ask that you please bring your student to this conference.**

I received this information from The University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College. This opportunity is for current seniors:
University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is partnering with Kirkwood Community College to offer an Ophthalmic Assistant course this coming spring. This course provides an introduction to an exciting and interesting area of health – vision! It is designed to help address the need for qualified Ophthalmic Assistants in the local eye care community. Clinical rotation sites for the course include University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
The 12-week course begins March 24, 2020. Classes will meet T/Th from 5:30pm-8:30pm at the Kirkwood Regional Center in Coralville. Parents of Juniors
The January Junior Checklist is now ready. The purpose of the checklist is to share post-high school planning materials with both juniors and parents.
Parents of Sophomores
As sophomores approach junior and senior year, their academic planning takes a big shift. One reason for the shift is that college credit opportunities will be available during both junior year and senior year. During the next couple of weeks I will be sharing college credit information with our sophomores. This includes:
Sharing information during our next ICAP Session (January 3)
All sophs will be visiting the Kirkwood Regional Center @ The University of Iowa on Tuesday, January 3, to learn more about KCC Academy Programs
I will be hosting a College Credit Information Night for parents of sophomores on Monday, January 13 in the HS Auditorium. This event starts @ 6:30 p.m.
The Workplace Learning ConnectionSpring Job Shadow Program
The Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) will be offering job shadow opportunities to students in grades 10 - 12 for second semester. Each of these job shadow opportunities will be in a group format (e.g. 10-12 students). Solon HS students who have completed a job shadow experience continually report that their job shadow experience was valuable in helping decide a career plan. The portal will open on January 6th and close on January 24th. The website will have all the new job shadow options posted by December 20th.
Spring 2020 Job Shadows (Current Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are eligible)
Applications are due - Friday, January 24, 2020 @ 3:00 p.m.

Summer 2020 Workplace Internships Opportunity.
The Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) will be offering job shadow opportunities to students in grades 10 & 11 for summer 2020. An internship is a 60-hour on-site experience. Over the past three years, more Solon HS students have completed an internship during the summer months because they have more time to schedule the hours. Solon HS students who have completed an internship experience continually report that the experience solidified their career plan. Students who successfully complete an internship receive three (3) elective credits.
The internship portal is NOW OPEN and WLC is accepting Summer 2020 internship applications. Current sophomores and juniors are eligible, with applications DUE by 3PM on Friday, February 7th!
