Course Overview
Expand your knowledge with an overview of the science of reading and purposeful practices supported by the research.
This online course consists of 11 modules of learning around the science of reading research and best practices. When you engage in this course, you will learn the definition of the science of reading, dive into data to understand why we are making the shift to the science of reading, and learn about effective, purposeful practice in the five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Course Outcomes
Participants will:
- Build understanding of what the science of reading is, including the foundations of the science of reading.
- Learn why the supporting research of the science of reading should be used in classroom instruction;
- Learn effective strategies for phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension to provide equitable and effective literacy instruction to all learners.
- Learn what should be taught, why it should be taught, and how to incorporate and teach the essential components of literacy in order.
- Be able to expand knowledge of implementing purposeful practices supported by the science of reading research.
Class Structure & Dates
This course is delivered completely online in a hybrid format (partial asynchronous learning and partial synchronous learning). None of this class is held in-person. Participants will be able to attend this class from wherever internet connection is possible. Participants will receive applicable Zoom links upon registering.
Synchronous Class Dates:
Participants will engage in synchronous learning (live via Zoom) at the followings dates/times:
- March 12th, 2024 (3:30-4:30pm)
- April 2nd, 2024 (3:30-4:30pm)
- April 29th, 2024 (3:30-4:30pm)
Asynchronous Learning:
Participants will engage in additional hours of asynchronous learning (learning on your own time) through an online Canvas course. Asynchronous coursework is to be completed by May 13th but may be completed earlier.
In order to receive License Renewal Credit or a record of completed work as a Participant Only, participants must engage in all 3 zoom sessions & complete all asynchronous learning work.
Target Audience
All educators who teach or utilize reading in their instruction including Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School, High School, and Administrative staff.
Materials Needed
