The Villanova Graduate Community

At this past Friday's New Student Orientation, I challenged our incoming class to reach out, engage and connect with students and faculty both within and outside of their academic programs. That's good advice for all of us. By doing so, we will enrich both our own experiences and our greater graduate community. As I said to our newest colleagues, your graduate experience is what you make it to be. I encourage you to explore all that Villanova has to offer. From lectures and symposiums, to athletics and the arts, our University has innumerable opportunities to complement your academic endeavors.

We also have a number of excellent resources for graduate students, and representatives from many different areas gave presentations at Orientation, including the Health Center, Counseling Center, Campus Ministry, UNIT and the Office of Research Protections, to name a few. The message I want you to take away from this list of resources is that we are here to help. The Graduate Studies staff, your program director and staff, and faculty and staff across the University are here to guide you on your intellectual journey. In fact, that is the only reason we are here!

I close with one final note. Our unique learning community is only possible because we expect mutual love and respect to animate every aspect of university life. We have guidelines established in the Student Handbook to help create an environment in which mutual love and respect can flourish. As a member of this community, you are expected to help create a safe and peaceful environment that respects and supports individual differences. These expectations should guide your actions on and off campus, including online spaces.

To our new students, let me offer one more hearty welcome to Villanova! To our returning students, welcome back! Thank you for choosing to follow your passion at Villanova.

- Emory Woodard, PhD, Dean of Graduate Studies, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
