A Note from Mrs. Pitts
Dear RES Families and Supporters,
It is the time of year when we begin to think about student placement for the 2023-2024 school year. All personnel involved in placement spend a great deal of time, effort and energy considering the factors that will help determine the appropriate placement for each child, and the best grouping of students within each class. Input will be provided by classroom teachers, specialists and other school personnel. Though perspectives may be different, the intent will be to do the best we can for each and every child here at Rye Elementary School.
We are committed to creating balanced classes so that each one represents a microcosm of the total school community. A balanced class takes into consideration a range of academic achievement, abilities and interests; and a range of social maturity. We consider a variety of factors in grouping students, including: placing students with at least one peer from this year's class, separating certain individuals for a myriad of reasons, and placing an assortment of personality types in each class. We will consider which children should be placed together because they positively reinforce each other and which children should be separated because they may impede one another's learning. Our goal is to build classes where all students thrive and grow academically and socially.
Based on the small community that we have at RES, sometimes with only two options for class placements, we cannot honor any requests. HOWEVER, if you have an extenuating circumstance that is truly unique and should be considered, please email Michelle Pitts. This information will be considered, but due to many factors, may not be possible. After class placement for 2023-2024 is sent to students, we know that we can work through any potential challenges that were not originally anticipated because we value teamwork, especially between home and school.
Below are some factors to consider:
-We only consider information from this current year as we may not be privy or have information about particular relationships between students, etc. from previous years.
-Please do not assume that incidents between certain children will be recalled during the placement process as this is a challenge when so many factors are being considered.
-It is important to understand that anything written will be shared with teachers after the Principal has read them.
-Requests for specific teachers cannot be honored. The process of placing students is multifaceted, rendering it impossible to honor these requests.
-Please understand that the Rye Elementary staff cannot take calls or discuss placement regarding specific placement requests. To do so would compromise the hard work of all involved.
As always, let us assure you that we at RES understand the importance of student placement and will continue to seriously weigh all available information in order to create classes where every student will be happy and successful. Our professional staff will have the ability to make the final determination in the process, considering what is best for teaching and learning.
We thank you for your continued support of the processes we thoughtfully develop here at RES!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Pitts

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK!!!
RES Families-
Seeking your help to ensure that the RES staff realizes how valued they are during Appreciation Week! A simple project will be coming home in folders on Thursday 4/13 are to be returned by Friday 4/21.
Please encourage your student to write a thank you note to (4) different staff members at RES. Please use the person’s title, explain why they are special and close out with the student’s name and grade. By completing 4 notes, this increases the odds of recognition for EVERY staff member (teachers, unified arts, academic support, paraprofessionals, building staff, etc.).
Please return to school by Friday 4/21 as the notes will be displayed in the lobby during appreciation week (5/8-5/12)! Thank you for your support!

Life On a Plate: Overview
So often in this world we hear stories of greatness, stories of triumph. This is one of those stories… It’s a small story, almost unnoticeable. Life on a Plate is the heroic tale of an underdog, or in this case “the last pea on the plate,” passed over time and time again. Join Pea, Carrot, and all the other inhabitants of the fridge on an eggs-i-stential journey to food paradise...with lots of fun music!!
~Written and Conceived by Miles Burns and Hannah Morrisse

Kindergarten
IMPORTANT: CURRENT KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES AND INCOMING KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES!
Incoming K Families
We are excited to bring back Kindergarten screening! We have a comprehensive plan to learn more about our incoming Kindergarten students. We will be scheduling a 45 minute block with each child to work with our school-based team so we can better understand their current skills and areas of focus when they arrive in August!
We will be sending an email on Monday with the sign up for screening as well as some information that might be helpful for the upcoming year. In the meantime, PLEASE SAVE THE DATE. We will hold our Kindergarten Orientation Night on May 18 at 6:00 PM. In addition, children will be screened on June 15.
Current K Families
Due to our need to screen our incoming Kindergarten students, which utilizes both the Kindergarten classrooms and staff, the last day for Kindergarten students will be June 14 (full day). In the future, we promise to have these dates solidified in August so families are aware. The screening process is vital for several reasons and this will be a bump this year that will not continue in the future. Our K students will still participate in all the end of year activities!
Due to the fact that these dates were unexpected, we have arranged spaces and staff for our Kindergarten students on June 15 (full day) and 16 (half day). This will be run similarly to the Rye Rec program and we would like to thank them for their incredible flexibility and teamwork! Students will spend this time in the Rye Rec rooms at RES and the staff will be from Rye Rec as well.
We would NEED to know if families want to utilize this Rye Rec option so PLEASE email Staci Ryan at sryan@sau50.org.

ATTENTION: ALL FAMILIES!!
We are so excited to let you know that the Yearbooks are in the process of being created for the 2022-2023 school year. Parents and or guardians, aunts, uncles and grandparents, if you would like to write a note about your amazing student, you can do so on a piece of paper measuring 1 ½” x 2 ½” ($2 each) and then hand them to Miss Shari in the office. Please only one response per family as we need to be sure everyone interested gets a space in the yearbook.
A few examples from previous years include:
1. “We cannot believe you are growing up so fast, (name of student), and we are so
proud of all your accomplishments at RES! We love you, Mom and Dad.”
2. (Name of student), you are growing into such a strong and confident young lady.
Share your sparkle with everyone you meet!”, Love Mom, Dad, brother, sister.
Deadline is April 14, 2023

NEW SECTION: Pick a Project!!!
THIS WEEK...
PROJECT 1: Once Upon a Time There Was an RES Book Swap…
As part of RES’s celebration of Earth Day, we want to act on the “Reuse” part of the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle call to action. This year, we are asking Rye families to clean out their home libraries, drop off a gently used children’s book or a bag of children’s books – whatever works for you - at the RES Library before April 19 for an Earth Day Book Swap on April 21.
These books will be set up on tables in the hallway on Earth Day and each class will come by, giving students the opportunity to pick up a book and give it a new home.
PROJECT 2: ANYONE! SUPPORT OUR PLAY!
Would you like to send a "shoutout" to one of our RES students for their work in "Life on a Plate?" Use this link to send one! PROJECT 1: ANYONE!
