From the Principal
Fairbrook Families,
As we move through the winter months and find ourselves inside most of the time, it can feel like there is a little too much "togetherness" time. This can sometimes cause people to feel anxious or irritated. One way to counteract these issues is by finding ways to have fun together as a family. Families who have fun together and who truly make a point of enjoying each other build bonds that will last a lifetime. Laughter, being silly, and having fun with your kids is one simple way of switching the mood when everyone is feeling overly reactive. Of course children need boundaries and structure, but "playful parenting" and positive experiences as a family add more to your child's life and development than you may be aware of:
Prepares children for relationships
Encourages connection with others
Offers positive reinforcement about being in a loving relationship
Reinforces positive and healthy desires as dopamine is released from the reward system in connection with enjoying family relationships (i.e., fun and play is a reward)
Reinforces bonds between parent and child
Improves sibling relationships
Improves child's receptivity, reduces reactivity
Helps to shift negative emotions
Reduces power struggles and encourages cooperation!
If you're looking for some ideas, this article called "87 Fun things to Do at Home to Avoid Cabin Fever" may be helpful: https://www.todaysparent.com/family/activities/fun-things-to-do-at-home/
So, don't hold back...enjoy your sweet kiddos, let yourself go a little, and have some fun!
Because of Ohio weather, we advise that you dress your child in layers so they can be prepared for the ever-changing weather. Also, please make sure they wear or bring gym shoes on PE days. Other types of footwear make it difficult for your child to participate safely in PE class.
Don’t forget to check our Lost and Found if you are missing a coat, lunchbox or gloves/hats. Also, please check your child’s lunch account balance! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, Mrs. Laravie, or me. We can be reached by email or phone. You are more than welcome to meet with any of us, but we ask that you make an appointment so we can be sure to be available for you. Thank you for all of your support!

Read-a-Thon
Fairbrook has decided to hold a Read-a-thon this year!
Read-a-thons get your reader excited about reading and it gives friends and family the opportunity to encourage your child to read even more.
Our Read-a-thon starts Monday, February 26, 2024.
About one week before our Read-a-thon starts we will send home instructions on activating your reader's personal page. This is where you will be able to view and record their progress.
We encourage you to activate your reader’s account today by clicking on https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/323738363936/1 and following the simple instructions.
We've chosen Read-a-thon because it will not take much of your time, gives your child a reason to read, and helps in the development of stronger reading skills. All of the money raised will go to the Principal’s Fund to support our students and staff!
We hope EVERYONE participates.
Thanks so much!
WatchDOGS
Who are WatchDOGS?
(Dads of Great Students)
WatchDOGS are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who
volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S.® school.
During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students,
play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways,
assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively
engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Please see the PDF below for more details.
From the Front Office
Your students' safety is our priority!
Student Dismissals - If your student is being picked up by someone other than their parent or legal guardian, the office must be notified in advance of the name of the person picking them up. In addition, that person must present a photo ID upon arrival. For the safety of our students, we will call parents for permission before releasing them if we did not receive prior notice. Thank you for your patience and assistance in this matter.
To report an absence or late arrival, please call the absence line at 937-429-7616 option 1, or send an email to fairbrookattendance@gocreek.org. Please include your child’s name, teacher, and reason for the absence or late arrival. Please bring in doctor/dentist notes from appointments within 5 school days.
When sending correspondence by email to teachers regarding absences, late arrivals, early dismissals, or changes in daily transportation, please include our office staff at fairbrookattendance@gocreek.org. Please notify the office no later than 3:00pm with any last minute changes for afternoon dismissal, limiting changes to emergency situations or medical appointments, and attempt to complete early dismissals by 3:30pm.
We are always happy to help answer your questions!
Mrs. Soine and Mrs. Osterday
Visitor Window
UPDATE: As an added safety measure, our front doors are now locked during the school day. Please come to the window for assistance. We will open the doors at 3:40 to allow parents in for dismissal.
Our transaction window has been updated and is now in service! Please step to the window at the right of the front doors for assistance before entering the building. Mrs. Soine and Mrs. Osterday will be happy to assist you there. If you are picking up a student or plan to enter the building for any reason, please be sure that you bring your state ID with you when you arrive.
Nurse's Nook
The clinic is in need of girls' leggings and sweatpants sizes 5-12!
Due to the increase in illness-related absences (both students and staff) that occur this time of year, we would like to reiterate our district illness policies (see below). When calling/emailing/messaging about an illness-related absence, please inform us of the type of illness (fever, flu, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.).
INFLUENZA INFORMATION
Beavercreek City Schools District Policy regarding influenza diagnosis specify that students must remain out of school for a minimum of three (3) days post-diagnosis and at the discretion of school nurse or administrator. If, after those mandatory three (3) days, the child still has a fever or any other symptoms that would warrant exclusion from school (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), then this will also follow the 24-hour symptom-free (without medication) policy (see below); that indicates that students are not allowed to be at school for an additional 24 hours after the cessation of the aforementioned symptoms and with no medications (e.g. Tylenol/Motrin, antiemetics, etc.).
If you have tested positive for Influenza A or B, please contact the school office at 429-7616 or FAIRBROOKATTENDANCE@GOCREEK.ORG.
Please also understand that if you obtain a note from your medical provider that states that the child is able to return to school, that this document does NOT supersede school policy. These policies are written with the health and safety of your child (and all other students) as the main objective.
OTHER (COMMUNICABLE) ILLNESS POLICIES
Bacterial Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) - Return to school after 24 hours of being on antibiotics
Strep Throat - return to school after 24 hours of being on antibiotics AND being fever free for 24 hours (without the use of medication).
Fever - (100.4 or above) - return to school after being fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication
Vomiting - return to school after being vomit free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication
Diarrhea - If 2 or more episodes of diarrhea occurs within a 24 hour period, the child is to be excluded from school until diarrhea free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication
Extra clarification of the 24 hour rule:
If your child has fever/vomiting/diarrhea on Monday, they are not to be at school on Monday ( the day of the symptoms) and then an ADDITIONAL 24 hours afterward. If their symptoms are gone on Tuesday (without medication), they can return to school on Wednesday. However, if they are still symptomatic on Tuesday, they would need to remain home on Wednesday as well - and so on. The state recommendation if 48 hours symptom-free before returning to school, as the additional day of recovery allows for better healing.

Orchestra and You
On January 25th, the Orchestra and You program visited Fairbrook Elementary School. Second grade students learned about the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, their theater, and the instruments they play. Students got to "play" the orchestral instruments together, with our very own conductor!
From the Skills Lab
Hello Fairbrook Families!
It’s February! A month that celebrates many things; there’s Black History Month, President’s Day, and Valentine’s Day to name a few; and all of the things that we do to celebrate the occasions listed involve respect and love for others. In the Skills Lab we are continuing to study netiquette, which embraces the same concepts.
We have been focusing on the power of words. Our students have tried to help a person who they can not see, and who can’t see them, draw a simple shape like a triangle or a square. The results can be surprising. 🙂 We have also done some activities where we change the words in a story to see if the story still makes sense. Lastly, we have looked at some examples of printed material that was sent out misspelled or grammatically incorrect. These can be pretty funny. 😂 The point being; using the right words, in the right way, matters. Especially when we are being kind to one another.
We are also in the middle of our first quest to find “Fairbrook's Top Typing Classes”. Each week third through fifth grade classes are taking a typing test to see if their score will qualify as the “points for the class”. It has been fun to see different students get the honor of representing their class weekly, as well as seeing a few stars emerge from the class that we don’t usually hear from; and of course, it’s always nice to hear the congratulations and words of encouragement shared between students.
The rules for this contest are explained at this link: Rules and Guidelines for Fairbrooks "Top Typers" Contest
I hope you all remember to share your love and respect for each other this month.
Sincerely,
Sheri Hensley
