Eagle Connection #2
Week of September 4 - September 8, 2023
Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families! We hope that you’ve enjoyed this beautiful Labor Day weekend. We are calling tonight with some updates for the week of September 5-8. We encourage you to visit our Eagle Connection page for more information and a direct link to each teacher’s newsletter. This newsletter can be translated into many languages by clicking on the circular icon with the stick figure in the bottom right corner. Link to Eagle Connection #2: https://www.smore.com/akx0t
Thanks for your patience as we’ve settled morning and afternoon routines. We are proud of our students for their independence. We know that managing arrivals and departures for 400+ people every day can be hectic, so you will find a courtesy reminder about safety in your child’s folder tomorrow. Thank you in advance for working to keep everyone safe.
We are recruiting interested parents and guardians to participate as part of our school parent advisory team. This team will meet four times this year to provide feedback to the school on our schoolwide program, policies, and events. We will meet on Thursday, September 7 at 6:00 for the first meeting of the year in the media center. Please note that we have moved the date for this meeting (from the original date of the calendar). We will discuss our school's participation as a Title 1 school, this year's parent and family engagement plans, safety planning, instructional programs, field trips, and other school events. We also set aside time at each meeting for parent questions. All are welcome.
On Thursday, our third grade students will take the NC Beginning of Third Grade reading test. This test will be given first thing and will take about two hours. Results will be shared with parents and will help inform teachers about your child’s instructional needs in reading. This testing should not impact students in other grades.
We have some messages from our Wilkesboro PTO. Please check your child’s green folder this week for invitations for two upcoming events. On Friday, Sept. 8, PTO will host the first PTO after school dance of the year for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from 3:15 - 5:00. Later this week, you will find invitations to Grandparents’ Day celebrations which will occur the following week. Reservations are required for both, so please see invitations in green folders for full details.
PTO has an online store for purchasing school shirts, sweatshirts, and more throughSeptember 15. All transactions can be done online, and your merchandise will be delivered directly to school. If you want to place a cash order, please message Mrs. Spears directly. Proceeds of PTO sales come back to directly support your child at school.
We want to thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and cooperation. We are grateful to our Wilkesboro Elementary family for so many things, and we look forward to another great week!

We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.
Car Line Helpers Needed!
We are looking for friend, positive people to help on morning carline. If you're interested, please complete this form and we will be in touch. Thanks for considering this volunteer opportunity!

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
