JAJHS Families,

Good afternoon from JAJHS! It's been a busy week around the building and I want to again share how proud I am of the students we are teaching this year! We are about halfway through MAP testing and it is great to see how hard our kids are working. Our teachers will use this testing data to determine what areas our students need to be supported and challenged.

This afternoon we met with 7th and 8th graders in the auditorium to discuss some important reminders about digital citizenship and appropriate uses of technology. Some of our reminders included:

* Being responsible for your account and content on your school account

* All emails, documents, and messages sent through school accounts must follow our code of conduct. Students sometimes make mistakes while creating/sharing documents, memes, messages or photos.

*Physical care of devices and only using Chromebook at assigned times for assigned purposes.

Lastly, we spoke with students about the importance of their behavior regarding cell phones, messaging, and social media. Unfortunately, the school often becomes involved with situations where students' content becomes offensive, harassing and a disruption to the school environment. I strongly encourage you to have regular conversations with your child about the importance of using personal technology responsibly and the potential legal and long-term consequences of improper use. These discussions are never comfortable but are essential in helping students navigate very impressionable years of their lives.

We ended the grade-level meeting on some lighter notes: celebrating students! We help our first drawing of the year for our PBIS Alder All-Star program and recognized students who have been seen being Respectful, Responsible, Safe and Connected around the building!

It has been a great start to the school year both in the classroom and out on the football field, volleyball court and cross country courses! We have had great turnout for our athletic events and our ticketing system seems to be working well with very few issues. Our student athletes have been working hard and we would love to see you in the stands cheering on our kids!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has come to the attention of the Food Service Department that many families are not aware of their eligibility status regarding their Free and Reduced Price Meal Application. This is most likely due to emails going to the SPAM folder. The software we use as our Point of Sale and notification system is Solana. Emails regarding your child's account balance and your family eligibility will come from Solanaadmin@horizonsolana.com Please add this email to your contacts to receive any emails in the future.

Grace for students that were approved for free or reduced meals last year will end on September 27th. Applications must be filled our prior to this date to avoid incurring meal charges.

For fees to be waived, an approved free application must be on file with a signed waiver form. This is Section 5 in Final Forms. If you received an email at the beginning of the year instructing you to not fill out an application because your child has been determined to be free by Rebecca Rings, you still must complete a waiver form or click yes on the Final Forms application, yes on Section 5 and sign the form. The state of Ohio requires vaccines for students entering the 7th grade. These requirements include:

1. Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)

2. Meningococcal-ACY (Meningitis)

If your child has not received these vaccines, please make arrangements to obtain these immunizations as soon as possible. You may schedule these vaccines with your child's doctor, the health department or a walk-in clinic. If your child has received these vaccines, please make sure to forward a copy of the record to the school fax (614-873-0845, drop off in the school office or email them to cazareje@japioneers.org

We are excited to showcase our 8th Grade Band on September 23rd, at the High School Football Game! They will be performing with the High School Marching Band on the field during their Pregame Show and will also perform with the band in the stands during the game. Informational Letters were sent home with band students this week and can also be found on their Canvas Band Page. We hope to see you there!

Connecting with our PTO is a great way to meet other families and to get involved with your child's school! We are always looking for volunteers to help out at our concession stands for athletic events. Even if you have no experience, please consider signing up for a game to help out and meet other families! We will provide training and support throughout the event!

We plan to offer the Washington, DC trip experience again this year for our 8th grade students. We will share information as we have it available about the trip, chaperoning and associated costs. Stay tuned!!

Information about signing up and auditioning for Drama Club will be shared soon! We are excited to offer these experiences as ways for our students to connect at school. Information will be shared on the daily announcements for students.

We are very excited to partner with AWS and promote their Girls' Tech Day event which will be on Friday, October 21, from 9am-1:30pm at COSI. In order to plan for this event, please help me by filling out a very quick survey no later than Friday 9/16. Below is a tidbit of information about the event.

Girls’ Tech Day aims to inspire and motivate girls and young women to develop and pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). Students will enjoy an engaging opening session with a dynamic panel of STEAM professionals, followed by interactive workshops to explore the industry further.

*This event will be held at COSI and take place on the day that we have our Fall Break.
*This event is only for girls in grades 5-8.

Medications at School

Sometimes parents ask that school personnel administer medication to their child during the school day. When this is necessary, we require written permission and instructions from the parent and in some instances from the doctor.

The required form “Distribution/Student Use of Medicines/Medications” must be completed and turned in to the junior high office with the medication to be administered.

School Fees

The school fees for 7th and 8th grade can be paid online using MyPaymentsPlus or you can bring cash or check to the school office. The fees are $30 per student for the 2022-2023 school year.
