New Fairfield Together in Wellness
Partering with NFHS to Promote Our Teens' Health and Wellness
Twice per month, we will be sharing information from New Fairfield Together in Wellness, formerly the New Fairfield Prevention Council, that families can use to support their teenagers.
Vaping
While most New Fairfield High School students are not vaping (86%)*, some reported current use of e-cigarettes or vape devices. The percentage of those in the senior class who reported vaping in the last 30 days was 27%. While these numbers are lower than what was reported in 2019, when overall 23% of students vaped in the last 30 days, we would like to reduce vaping rate among youth in New Fairfield. Young people have clearly gotten the message that smoking is unhealthy (only 1.6% of NFHS students reported smoking cigarettes in 2023). Unfortunately, accessibility to flavored vape products and manipulative marketing by the tobacco industry has influenced young people’s attitudes and behaviors regarding vaping. And some may be addicted to nicotine and may need support. Please take a look at the fact sheet from the FDA to learn more about vaping and e-cigarettes and have a conversation with your child.
