Westwood Elementary empowers all learners to grow in a safe and positive environment to launch a lifetime of learning.

It's hard to believe there's only one more week until Thanksgiving break! It seems like November and December just fly by.

You may have noticed our new security guard; Mr. Kivet Conner is our Certified School Security Officer. He went through psychological testing and extensive training before becoming certified by the state. The state actually doesn't require schools to have security be certified, but Springdale believes in only having the most qualified. His role is to help keep our school safe.

Do you want to find out how to get involved (or more involved) at Westwood? We have a Booster Club that's purpose is to support our staff and students. The Booster Club has purchased instruments, indoor recess equipment, outdoor equipment, books, items for Christmas gift bags or each student, and treats for staff. It also helps parents who want to volunteer find ways to do so. We have a meeting Thursday, Nov. 17th; there are two options- an in person here at school at 1:00 or a zoom at 6:30 for those who can't make it during the day. All parents who attend in person or on the zoom will be entered into a drawing for a gift card!

She will be doing some vision testing next week; students who wear glasses need to be sure they have them (as always). If you have concerns about your child's vision, contact the nurse, and she will be happy to screen.

All kindergarten physicals have to be done and turned in by Nov. 18th. If we don't have yours, Nurse Tina sent you a letter. Notify her if you need assistance.

I have 3 extra thermometers if anyone needs one- first come first served (notify nurse).

If you have some gently used pants your children have outgrown, Nurse Tina could use them! She mainly needs sizes S and M or 6-8. When students have accidents and don't have a change of clothes, we need something for them to change into. Thanks for your help!

If you are interested in your students attending Camp War Eagle next summer, check out the website here. The fee is based on income, so it may cost less than you think or even be free! My personal Crumby children have attended the last few summers, and they absolutely loved it. I would be happy to help answer any questions you have about camp or help you complete the application. You can apply after Dec. 15th, but those who apply before get 1st priority.

We are noticing a lot of our kids are late to school, checking out early, or not here at all- it makes us so sad for them to miss their learning and social time at school! In fact, as of Oct. 26th, we had 425 tardies and early checkouts just in October! The car line runs between 7:20-7:45; traffic is light until around 7:40. Every day, classes who are all here and on time (by 7:45) will earn a letter- when a class spells "West", there will be a fun surprise! We will continue on to spell "wood" and earn another surprise!

When students are late, they miss free breakfast (we always try to ask if they still need breakfast, but sometimes when it's busy in the office, it's hard to make sure). Also, every grade does some reading instruction first thing in the morning, so kids who aren't here on time miss that as well. Many students have a hard time coming in being ready to learn when they are upset or thrown off from being late. Please help us help our Wolves get off to the best start possible each day!

TEXTS: Click here to fill out a very short form that will add you to our text list. We use text messages to send out these weekly parent updates and reminders. We know texts are a convenient way to communicate for many of you, so please add yourself to the list by filling out this form. Multiple members of the same family can use it and each receive texts. If your phone number changes, you'll need to complete the form for your new number.

PHONE CALLS: We also send out phone calls through an automated system; you will receive these calls if your phone number is correct in Registration Gateway. If your number changes, you can update the information in Registration Gateway, or call the office to update.

SOCIAL MEDIA/WEBSITE: The weekly parent update and other announcements/stories are also posted on our school's Facebook page and website. We are working on activating our school's Instagram account also- we'll let you know when that's up and running.

PAPER NOTES: We also send out paper notes at times; most of these will be sent in folders that come home every Tuesday. Every now and then, we need to send information on other days, so it's a great practice to check the backpacks each afternoon/evening.

We don't want you to miss any information, so we put things out in lots of ways!

You should have received a letter over the summer as a reminder to update your child's information in registration gateway. The instructions for logging in were in the letter. If you have not done that, your student does not have an updated AUA (Acceptable Usage Agreement) form that we must have to assign a device (iPad or Chromebook) to your child. You'll need to update that ASAP. Here is the link if you need it. You can also come to the office to use one of our iPads if that would help.
