Winter Weather Decisions
Parents and guardians have the right to decide to keep their child home on any day they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your student at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact our school office to let us know.
Masks
Masks are not required for students, teachers, or staff. However, unvaccinated individuals are encouraged to wear masks to help keep everyone safe and healthy. Conversations will occur in our classrooms to promote tolerance and acceptance for students’ choices, regardless of their decision to wear or not wear a mask.

Conditions for Learning Survey Coming Soon
All Iowa public school districts are required to administer an annual school climate and culture survey to students in grades 3-12 called Conditions for Learning Survey. The survey is designed to measure their engagement in school, safety, and the overall learning environment. The survey will be administered to students in early April.
In April, parents and families of students in preschool through grade 12 will also have the opportunity to participate in the Parent Conditions for Learning Survey. The survey contains similar items to those on the student survey, focusing on areas that range from student safety and positive adult and student relationships to school rules and how they are enforced. Participation in the survey is encouraged, but it is completely voluntary, and all questions are optional to answer.
Please watch your email for more information on the survey.

Tips for Healthy Eyes
Your eyes are your window to the world. Keep your eyes healthy:
* Get an eye exam by an eye care professional. An eye care professional is the only one who can determine if your eyes are healthy and if you are seeing your best.
* Eat right to protect your sight. Try to eat fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens and foods high in Omega 3 fatty acids.
* Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home.
* Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s UV-A and UV-B ultraviolet rays.
* Give eyes a rest from a computer or video screen. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
