Assignment-Free Holiday Break!
Given the amount of fatigue, stress, exhaustion, and pressure that it seems like everyone is feeling right now, it's important that our upcoming holiday break from school feels like a break from school.
Teachers, students, staff and families are all working hard, and with the ongoing pandemic and lasting effects of the last 20+ months, we want to do all we can to provide opportunities for rest and rejuvenation when we can. We know that everyone needs some time to separate from school over the break, and we want people to focus on their families and their own personal needs.
So, this year, we are formally making the holiday break assignment-free.
Here is what you need to know, and what teachers will be communicating with their classes:
- There will be no assignments given with the expectation that work is done or due over vacation
- No work posted over vacation. Nothing new should be posted to Google Classroom, and students aren't required to check it over the break.
- No quizzes or tests will be given on January 3rd or 4th following the break. We are encouraging teachers and students to reacquaint with each other, and see what they remember from 2021!
- Students in AP classes may be asked to read (we hope everyone reads something!), but nothing to be submitted over the break or until January 5th. These classes are on a tight timeline with AP exams coming in early May, and since we know that many of our AP students are taking multiple high-level classes, we want to be sure they get some time to rest too!
- The only assignments students should work on over break should be to make up missing assignments, outstanding re-dos,. etc. Students who are missing work, have fallen behind, etc. should take advantage of this time when no new work is being added to the list.
This last point is important! We want students to be able to start up again after the vacation, which will be hard if they are still making up work, and that gets piled on with new assignments. So while there is no new work over the break, we want students to be able to close the book on outstanding assignments. Teachers will be working with those students, and we always encourage students to reach out to their teachers and make a plan with them!
We hope that making the vacation week assignment-free will help our students and staff to be able to enjoy the time off, and wish all of you and your families a healthy and restful holiday!
School Counseling Updates
PSAT Results
PSAT results are available for students and families to review. The school counselors are finishing visiting all of the English classrooms this week to discuss with students how to view the scores, what the scores mean, and other important information regarding the PSAT. All students take the PSAT in October of their 9th, 10th & 11th grade year. Juniors then take the SAT in March of their junior year as part of the State of Connecticut assessment. Students can then sign up to take the SAT through the College Board if they wish to take it again. Any questions regarding PSAT scores and the SAT test can be directed to your students' school counselor.
Military Visits
The various branches of the military will be visiting NFHS during lunch waves this week. Students who are interested in enlisting in the military can go speak with the recruiters at their convenience. Recruiters will also have information regarding the ROTC programs as well.
