What can you do to help your child at home?

1. READ, READ, READ - I would be happy to send home books if needed. Enjoy reading with or talking about books with your child.


2. Practice math facts - Even if your child can figure out their math facts, it is vital they know them quick and fast. This will greatly reduce stress and frustration in future math experiences.


3. This week and next week we are refreshing our addition and subtraction skills. Students should have an efficient and accurate strategy for these two operations. There are numerous opportunities to practice these skills. For example, hand them a newspaper ad and have them calculate a dream shopping experience. Math is everywhere - Embrace it!

This was a common response when I instructed students we would be solving directly on our desks. We used this work space to solve numerous addition problems and don't worry we cleaned up any mess we created.

The Best Part of Me

This week we worked on a writing project titled, "The Best Part of Me" We used photography to inspire detailed descriptions about what makes us special. We look forward to sharing this writing project with you soon!

Sharing Strategies

The students shared numerous addition and subtraction strategies this week. We discussed how the strategies work and explored their efficiency. Students should be able to talk about how their strategy works and utilize it effectively with larger numbers.

Genius Hour Kickstart

This work during genius hour time we discussed creativity, ideas, and developing questions. We read Dr. Seuss books to explore how his books demonstrate creativity. We also spent time wondering and brainstorming problems and solutions for a wide array of problems.

We Wonder...

Makerspace Celebration

Arriving to school safe and calm has been a major focus for Shepard. The students who demonstrated positive arrival behaviors have been earning stallion stickers. We had a goal of 112 stickers and we achieved our goal. In order to celebrate we headed to the makerspace. We explored MakeyMakey and Ozobot gadgets. We have doubled our goal and look forward to earning 224 stallion stickers.
