Las Positas Updates
9/1/23 Volume 3 (5)
Happy Friday!
You are your child's favorite teacher. This labor day weekend, share the wonders of science. Try the following activities with your child:
- Visit a part and collect items (if you are at home collect items around the house). Then organize them and talk about why they were organized in that way.
- Look for science at home. Why does the mirror fog up when you shower? Why do some plants grow better than others? Why does some food smell fill up the house?
The best thing is to nurture their curiosity and encourage them to ask more questions. Then spend time searching for those answers together, perhaps by visiting the library or going online. Be safe when searching by using sites such as https://www.safesearchkids.com/google-kids/.
This month we will focus on the IB Learner Profile "Communicator"
The IB Learner profile aims to develop students who are communicators. Students who are communicators understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.
Have a great weekend ~
Communicator
How can parents help to develop students who are Communicators at home?
- Take turns speaking and listening to one another about your daily events.
- Explore other forms of communication including symbols, signs, and sounds.
- Read a variety of texts and find connections between the books and your child's life.
- Discuss the TV programs and videos you watch together.
- Make books, magazines, and other reading material readily available.
- Take time to listen to your child when he/she talks with you, by turning off technology and providing undivided attention.
- Ask questions about what they are saying, ask for explanations.
- Act out stories, plays, poems, use language in fun creative ways.
- Sing together.
- Support other forms of communication via art, dance, music etc.
Healthy Attendance
Importance of Healthy School Attendance
It is very important that your child attends school every day and on time.
- Please, do not take vacations during school days. Students can only learn when they are here.
- Healthy habits will last a lifetime: Wash hands, sneeze/cough into arm, not hands, exercise, get enough sleep, and eat nutritious foods.
- Masks are optional.
If your child is sick (has a fever, is vomiting, tested COVID positive, etc.) please keep them home so that they can safely recover. Our learners need to be fever free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.
