Another Successful Medical Team
Below, read what one team member shares as she reflects upon the week of service.
As with previous trips to Guatemala, we were welcomed like family to serve in the mountains of Chiquimula once again. After the process of purchasing tickets and packing, and arriving in Guatemala City, our trip began with the journey out to Chiquimula. Day one allowed us time to get organized in our base camp, which is a small hotel in the city of Chiquimula. With much help and cooperation from the team, the Valdez family and their friends, we were able to accomplish the large task of sorting meds and allocating supplies for each day of the week. We were all so anxious to begin our clinic on Monday!
During the following four days, we were able to help and treat many men, women and children. Through medicine, playing with the children and communication, we were loving how Jesus helped us shine His light. Some of our team members were able to experience care above their expectations. These individuals walked to people who were physically unable to come to us. When hearing the impact from the stories of the team that evening, there was no doubt God's spirit was moving! There were many tears but also tears of joy from those who were truly experiencing God's Holy Spirit. It is amazing to see and feel how God connects us in an eternal way by placing us just where He wants us to be. The team will forever be impacted and connected through our week of serving.
Not only do we appreciate the wonderful meals and ways in which the Valdez family and their friends take care of us during our stay, but I personally love Paco and Priscila's original story. They way God game them the dreams and how they pursued their mission and ministry is so powerful. It is so great to see their dreams come to fruition.
It was exciting to visit the clinic in Camotan and get to meet all those who play a part in serving. We pray God's blessings for the future there.
It is always sad to see and hear stories of the people who are experiencing pain, both physically and mentally. Some individuals are crippled from previous injuries and unable to afford surgery. Some children suffer from malnutrition and other ailments. But as we continue God's service, we can help . . . Proverbs 14:31 says "Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their maker, but whoever is kind to the needy, honors God."
Lastly, let us all do what is good and honor God. We continue to pray for everyone in Guatemala.
Thank you to the Valdez family, the drivers, cooks and all who made our trip so meaningful. We look forward to coming back to serve!

Did You Know . . .
Ponche
One drink that comes out around holidays and other special occasions in Guatemala is a warm, fruity drink, commonly referred to as "Ponche".
Try it with your own family this Thanksgiving and Christmas - you won't be disappointed! Here is a recipe from comidasguatemaltecas.pro
INGREDIENTS
- 4 liters of water
- 1 pineapple
- 6 apples
- 1 cup of raisins
- 1 cup of prunes
- 2 plantains
- 1 papaya
- 1 coconut
- 1 jocote
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar
- 1 pinch of salt
Step 1: fill a large pot with water and warm over medium heat. Cut the fruit into bite size pieces and add them to the pot (if you have difficulties finding certain fruit listed, you may substitute any fruit that you like). However, it IS recommended that you make sure your fruit chosen have flavors that compliment one another being certain to avoid strong citrus flavors.
Step 2: When they are hot, add the cinnamon sticks, salt and sugar to your tasting. If it begins to boil, do not let it boil for too long. Just enough heat will release the flavors of the cinnamon sticks, but too much heat will reduce the liquid and change the flavors at the same time making the fruit bland.
Step 3:
Transfer the ponche from the large pot to a festive serving bowl or even a slow cooker where you can maintain the warmth of the beverage by keeping it set on low or warm.
This ponche is served HOT but leftovers (if there are any) can be kept in the refrigerator and reheated when ready to enjoy again!
