Superintendent Briefing
February 2022

A Note from Dr. Hanson, Superintendent
Dear Students, Staff, and Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for taking the time to read the Superintendent Briefing for February. In this edition, we have included new topics to keep you and your student/s informed about important events at North Platte Public Schools and around our community.
As we continue through the spring semester, I would like to remind you how valued you are to NPPS. Your support of volunteering, partnerships, and participation does not go unnoticed at the fantastic events in which our students are able to participate. We thank you and are grateful for your dedication to the district.
Please note the two additional teacher workdays added on February 4th and 11th. These dates will allow teachers to catch up on work that has been set aside to accommodate the ever-challenging COVID-19 pandemic.
We are NPPS. Come Grow With Us!
Sincerely,
Ron Hanson, NPPS
Superintendent

Sing Around NE
North Platte Public School music teachers organized and hosted the Sing Around NE event at NPHS on Saturday, January 15th. One hundred fifty seven students from North Platte and the surrounding area came together to perform. The event, sponsored by the Nebraska Choral Directors Association, is a showcase for some of the top choir students in each of the elementary schools. We appreciate our NPPS music teachers for their time and commitment to this event!
Thank you Janette Kammerer- Site Chair, Garrett Reese, Marta Nelson, Sheryl Radke, and Allison O'Neill!
Junior ACT Test Prep & Sophomore Pre-ACT Test Prep:
North Platte High School, in partnership with North Platte's very own Prodigy Studios, will be offering four Saturdays of ACT Test Prep for Juniors and four Pre-ACT Test Prep sessions during Bulldog Time for Sophomores. Both the junior and the sophomore sessions will be led by Prodigy Studios Instructor, Tyler Cronin. The test prep sessions will focus on several key areas:
- Familiarity of test structure
- Practice with test questions
- Tips & Tricks to better identify generalities
- Subject matter covered within the test
All juniors and their families were sent a sign-up link for the Saturday Test Prep Sessions. The sign-up is voluntary and test prep is free to NPHS juniors. All sophomores will attend their Pre-ACT test prep sessions during their assigned Bulldog Time period. No sign-up will be distributed.
The Nebraska NSCAS Junior ACT will be administered on March 22nd, 2022 and the Nebraska Pre-ACT for Sophomores will be administered on April 6th, 2022. More information on the specifics of these testing dates will be shared out to families by North Platte High School administration in the coming weeks.
North Platte High School Graduation Requirements:
The North Platte Public School Board of Education will enter into discussion during the next several board meetings to review the Financial Literacy Act that was signed into law on August 28, 2021. The requirements of the new law are outlined in the Nebraska Revised Statute 79-3001 to 79-3004. The North Platte Public School District will be moving forward to adopt the addition of the graduation requirement outlined in the statute. All students enrolled in North Platte High School beginning with the graduation cohort of 2024 and beyond will be required to take Personal Finance. North Platte High School already offers Personal Finance as an elective course so the course will be moved to a required course status. The statute further outlines financial literacy requirements for grades K-8. The Teaching & Learning Department will continue to review current financial literacy instruction at this level to ensure the requirements of the statute are met.
Technology
"Self-Serve" in the Parent Portal is ready for you to use.
Have you moved to a new location or have a different phone number? Did your household membership change?
"Self-Serve", in the Parent Portal, is ready for you to use to update any changes in your household.

Kids Klub
Kids Klub had a wonderful STEM mega day in January.
We enjoyed a day of building with legos, creating straw marble mazes, cup stacking, building marshmallows and spaghetti structures, and racing aluminum foil and craft stick skiers.
**IMPORTANT**
As a reminder for anyone who uses Kids Klub after school, there will be NO Kids Klub at any site on Thursday, February 24th.
We will be closed so that our staff can attend an after-school conference. We thank you for understanding and allowing our staff the opportunity to grow their skills.

1:00 pm – Until Food is Gone
This is an OPEN AIR, DRIVE THRU Distribution. Patrons will drive their car through a line, and volunteers will bring the boxed food to the car. Free of charge. 325 Households will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Food Bank of Heartland sponsors the Food Pantry.
Please start the line OUTSIDE of the school parking lot next to the tennis courts. DO NOT COME INTO THE PARKING LOT PRIOR TO THE SEMI UNLOADING THE DISTRIBUTION ITEMS.
If you are in the parking lot prior to the gates opening, we will ask you to move your vehicle. When the mobile distribution begins, cars can drive up to the gate by the Northeast corner of the football field. Patrons will drive through the alley between the football field and the high school building, exiting on West A Street. Use only the entrance closest to the tennis courts to avoid congestion as students leave after school. While waiting for the distribution to begin, you need to follow all traffic laws. Do not block driveways or streets for any reason. Safety is our number one concern, and we do not want anyone to get hurt.
