Roadrunner News
Riverside Elementary School
September 2023
News from Mrs. Thode
Happy September to you all. It has been a hot start to the school year. We are so happy to have all of our students and staff in the building.
The Roadrunners are Off and Running:
Students at Riverside have had a great start to the year. Staff members are working with students to teach the rules, routines, and procedures that will make this school year a success.
This year, students will be using iReady for both reading and math. Students start by taking a diagnostic assessment in each area. This assessment places them in lessons based on how they score. Students then complete lessons each week in both reading and math. The diagnostic will be given again in January and May. You will hear about your student's progress at parent-teacher conferences in October and February.
Arrival:
Arrival time in the morning is 8:00 for students eating breakfast and 8:25 for students not eating breakfast. All students should enter through the playground gates. Please do not have your child(ren) arrive before these times, as there are not adults to supervise. Thank you.
Preschool parents: If you would like your child to eat breakfast, please enter the school through the main doors, check-in at the office, and then escort and eat breakfast with your child. At 8:30, please exit the breakfast area, walk back to the main doors and then drop your child off with their teachers.
Dismissal:
Due to construction in the south parking lot to the south of the building, I am asking that all parents use the parking lot across from the school on Nash Street. Please use the crosswalk to ensure that everyone is safe and secure.
Dismissal times are:
3:15 for Preschool using the front doors-Parents will meet staff at the front door.
3:30 Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students through the front doors.
3:30 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students through the playground gates.
Please communicate with your child(ren) how they will be getting home each day. If your plans change, please call the office by 3:00 so that we can be sure to let them know in an appropriate amount of time.
Please remember that every Monday there is an early dismissal for teacher professional development. Dismissal times will be 2:15 and 2:30.
Questions:
Please call the office if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you all this school year.
Mrs. Thode

We’re Looking for Stories
Do you know a #SCCSD student or staff member with an inspiring story? We want to tell their story. Our “Believer. Achiever. Succeeder.” campaign highlights the remarkable people of our district. Stories of individuals are shared on our website and social media sites. To nominate a deserving individual, email the individual’s name, contact information, and a one-sentence description about why the individual deserves to be highlighted as part of the District’s campaign to Communications@live.siouxcityschools.com.
Update Your Contact Information
The District and our school are continuously updating families on important school information, closings and cancellations, and other announcements. Information is shared through email, phone calls, and text. Make sure we can connect with you by keeping your contact information updated in our records. If you need to change your contact information, please contact the school office.
Reminder: Cell Phone Protocols Are In Place
The District has cell phone protocols in place to ensure an engaging and distraction-free environment for our students. The protocols restrict the use of electronic devices during the school day.
If you need to contact your student during the school day, please contact our school office. Alternatively, if your student needs to contact you, they should come to the office.
For more information on our protocols for electronic devices, please review the 2023-2024 Parent/Guardian & Student Handbook on the District website.
Be An Advocate for Our Schools
Volunteers are needed to join the District’s Grassroots Advocacy Committee. As a volunteer, you will receive email updates about important legislative events that could impact public education and be asked to contact local and state leaders to advocate for our schools. Volunteer today and let your voice be heard! Contact
Communications@live.siouxcityschools.com to volunteer.
Join Our Team
Looking for a part-time or full-time career with flexibility? Instructional assistants, bus drivers, and food service staff are needed to join our amazing team! Check out the District’s openings today!
School Safety
The safety of our students and staff is paramount. The District uses Standard Response Protocol or common terms to communicate our action and response to an emergency situation. The terms Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter are used so students, staff, and first responders understand the situation and how best to respond.
We encourage families to become familiar with these terms to better understand our school’s response and what to expect in a crisis situation. For more information on safety preparedness within the District, visit siouxcityschools.org.
