Battle of the Border
What an exciting night for the Battle of the Border. We had a fabulous crowd of students, staff and Newport and Priest River community members present. Our students worked extremely hard and earned the spirit trophy! Our students raised over $1200 for a great charity, Raise for Rowyn, that is near and dear to the Newport community, as they have helped two of our families in the past. We have such incredible kids here at NHS!
Griz of the Month
We also celebrated our Griz of the Month winners this week. Left to right below are Mrs. Henshaw, Sophomore Cooper Erickson, Freshman Mason Wink, Freshman Bella Boyd, Senior Jess (Barbie) Johnson, Junior Chase Warren, Senior Laney Bojorquez, Junior Olivia Sears. Not pictured is Sophomore Holly Waterman. Congrats Grizzlies!
Conference Time
Attendance Matters
Grizzly Parents...starting at the end of February you will be receiving an email to communicate where your student(s) stand as far as attendance. You and your student will receive a letter stating whether your student is in one of three (Green, Yellow or Red) zones. You can see in the picture above the 3 zones and how they relate to the number of absences each month. You will receive a letter at the end of each trimester, starting with the end of the 2nd trimester on March 8th. This letter will tell you what zone you student(s) are in for the whole trimester.
HOSA - Future Health Professionals
Donating blood makes an impact!
Our NHS HOSA - Future Health Professionals - students are partnering with Vitalant to host a blood drive in the NHS parking lot on Wednesday, February 21st from 9-12. Students who are 16 and older are eligible to donate with a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian. If you are over 18, you can scan the QR code on the flyer to make an appointment.
Maws & Paws Booster Club
Dress Giveaway
If your student is looking for a formal dress for the Winter Ball, February 24 please see the attached flyer from the Newport Library. All gently used dresses are free.
Senior Parents
Parents...If your senior gets accepted to any post high school college, trade school or military branch, we want to know. They can pick up the slips below from their advisory teacher to fill out and turn into Mr. Bouldin. We celebrate these in the Grizzly Gram and they get their name on the Accepted Grizzlies wall at school. Please help your student to remember to turn these in. Go Griz!

FAFSA Info!
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is finally available and it is easier than ever!!!
Seniors, fill out your FAFSA form! Even if at this moment you do not think you will attend college next year, if your form is completed, you will have options. The information is used for trade schools, apprenticeship programs, community college, universities, and some scholarships. The sooner you apply, the more likely there will be money available to award, and many of you may be pleasantly surprised to find that your post-secondary plans ARE financially possible.
The application our seniors need to complete is the 2024-2025 application, and it just opened up on December 31st.
Over the next month, I will continue to send you emails and resources to help with the process. The first step is the creation of the FSA ID. I will be available in the high school library during NHS conferences on both January 30th and 31st to help families start/complete their FAFSA. As always, you are welcome to email or call and I will help as well. I was truly surprised at how much easier the process was this year.
Financial Aid Applications:
Please complete the FAFSA application. This can be used to fund trade schools, apprenticeships, colleges, and universities. Many of these post-secondary programs also rely on the FAFSA when awarding merit based scholarships so it is important to apply.
Step 1: Create an FSA ID: Start Here
All that is needed:
Student’s Social Security Number
Student’s Personal Email (please make sure it’s your personal email address so you can access it after you graduate.)
Step 2: Complete the FAFSA Form: Student Aid Website
All that is needed with this new form:
Your newly created FSA ID (see above)
The Social Security Number and date of birth for ONE of your parents.
That’s it!!! Consider taking time this weekend.
If you do need help, please contact me, come in during conferences or
Stop by STCU (Newport Branch: Jan 24th 5:30-7:30)
If you are not eligible to complete the FAFSA due to immigration status, defaulted federal loans, or other issues with federal aid, file the WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid). Learn more and apply on the WASFA page.
