Principal's Update
Our goal is for students to learn phonics and word parts, and think critically about words to read accurately and with meaning. While English can seem random at times, over 80% of words follow predictable rules and patterns. We can't ever teach every word kids will encounter, but we can teach them how to approach unknown words.
When reading with your child at home, if they get stuck on a word, encourage them to:
1) Look at the word. (You might even say, "Put your finger under the word.")
2) Say the parts you know. (This might be a letter, a syllable, or a chunk of the word).
3) Go back and say it faster.
4) Go back and re-read it. (Often, when the put it in context, they're able to use the parts they know to find the word that makes sense).
As the year has progressed, students in grades 3-5 have been learning about prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Ask them about some of the word parts they've learned, and what they mean!
