6th Grade Counseling Newsletter
1st Quarter Review
Meet Mrs. Leon
WELCOME to the 2017-2018 school year! My name is April Leon and I am the 6th grade School Counselor. This will be my 3rd year at West Millbrook. My professional background includes working in the mental health field and in education. I have been with WCPSS since 2009. Originally from New York, I came to NC in 2007 and I do not plan on going back up North. I am excited to be working with your child(ren) this year. 6th grade will be difficult for some students and easy for others. Not to fear, your School Counselor is here! My goal this year is to make sure all my 6th graders are adjusting to middle school, succeeding academically, and staying safe while in school. I will greatly appreciate your help with this. A partnership between home and school is critical to a child’s educational career. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Again, welcome to the 2017-2018 school year and welcome to middle school.
I will be sending out a newsletter on a quarterly basis. Please take some time to read and see what is going on with 6th grade counseling.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached by email (aleon@wcpss.net), through the contact from on my website, or by phone (ext 24305).
Access To Grades
How do parents get started?
You can gain access to Home Base by either downloading the notary public form or the photo ID form. You can hand deliver the form to the main office and show your photo id or complete the notarized form and turn it in to the main office. Below are the forms needed to gain access.
This is a great way for parents to stay on top of their child(ren)s grades. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact me HERE.
6th Grade Needs Assessment
Students were given a needs assessment during the month of October to help me identify what the needs were in transitioning into middle school. Based on the results, I will use the data to developing classroom guidance lessons for all 6th grades, as well as small groups. I am currently in the process of securing dates to conduct a lesson on Good Study Habits, Organization, Homework Help, and Anxiety. The other categories will be conducted through small groups throughout the year.
I have included the results in this newsletter based on teams. Sharing the results will help you all as parents get an understanding of what middle schoolers are dealing with, and help you see what you can do to assist your child at home.
The Jaguars Other includes: stress, time management, bullying, tardies and transitioning between classes, locker and bathroom breaks.
The Lynx Other includes: flexibility, more time to socialize, and bullying.
Bullying Prevention Classroom Lesson
I had the pleasure of going into the health classrooms and conducting my own version of an Escape Room Bullying Prevention Lesson. The students really loved the activity and worked hard with their peers. The objective of the lesson was to work as a team to unlock the box and access the tools needed in order to save victims of bullying. The lesson provided students an opportunity to have conversation around what the different types of bullying are, how they look, and ways to prevent bullying. Students were required to incorporate the 4C's during the activity: collaboration, critical thinking, communicate, and creativity. I really enjoyed working with 6th grades on this lesson. They were very knowledgeable about the topic of bullying. Students also signed a poster pledging that they will stand up to bullying which is hung in our building for daily reminder to be e buddy and not a bully. Check out some the pictures below of our bullying activity.
