🎃 A Message from Your Principal 🎃
Attendance Matters!
It is so important that our scholars are in school for every class, every day. Being physically present in school is a necessary precursor to learning. Chronic absences/tardies to school prevent students from learning the skills they need to succeed in each grade level of school. Research has repeatedly found a “clear and consistent relationship between attendance and achievement.” I encourage each family to prioritize their scholar’s attendance as we move throughout the school year. If your scholar needs to be out, please make sure to reach out to their teachers for make-up assignments and submit a note explaining their absences within 5 days of the absence. We may only accept notes from parents for 5 days missed, all other absences will require a doctor note to be excused. Please know we are here to assist you as we work together for your scholar's growth!

We look forward to another exciting month of learning and fun this month.✏️

🕷️Reminders for Students & Families🕷️
Bubble Slides
Bubble slide shoes are not allowed at school, whether they have a strap or not. Per county policy, shoes must 1. be worn at all times, 2. not resemble what is considered a bedroom slipper, and 3. have a hard or rubber sole.
Hats & Hoods
With the weather cooling down, more students are wearing hats and hoods to school. Per county policy, hats & hoods may not be worn in the building at any time. Please remind your students to keep them off while inside the building.
Staying in the Classroom
We have a large number of students who are eloping class, or leaving the room without permission. It is important for our students to develop the skills necessary to handle conflict and frustration by verbalizing to their teachers that a break is needed and using the ZEN DENS that are located inside each teacher's classroom. If your student does not know where their teacher's zen den is located, please ask your teacher.

🎃 Community School Coordinator 🎃
Glen Avenue is a part of an amazing Salisbury area community. So many resources are available to our Gator families and neighbors. Throughout the year we partner with many community resources to help meet all the needs of our students and their families. The United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, Maryland Food Bank and faith based partners are a few of the organizations that support our students at Glen.

Solving Conflicts
Whenever disagreements arise, it takes skill to resolve them. Conflict resolution is a skill that can be and needs to be taught. Most children cower at conflict and do not enjoy the tense feeling. There are a few who ultimately thrive off of conflict and look for ways to create it in their peer groups or with adults. As adults we need to understand we are models for the children to look up to when disagreements occur. How do we as adults handle our emotions when we don't get our way? How do we solve conflicts with other adult family members or friends? And how do we handle conflict with our children?
Here is an article that gives steps to solve conflicts without big blow-ups that can cause more harm than good.
🍭Nurse's Notes🦷
It’s that time of year when our youth often engage in fun activities and consume candy and sweets. Whether you’re a caregiver that allows your child to splurge or you limit the amounts of sugar your child eats, the health of your child’s teeth matters. Oral hygiene habits are extremely important to establish in your child’s daily routine. Something as simple as a toothbrush has the amazing power to rid your child’s teeth of cavity-producing sugar and mouth germs. Don’t forget the floss as well! If we make certain that our children are practicing oral hygiene twice a day (morning and night) and monitoring that they are using proper technique, then it will produce outcomes such as cavity prevention, absence of teeth pain, avoidance of gum disease or mouth ulcers and potentially deter a student from missing school due to extensive dental work needed. This could save a caregiver time and money.
If your child is currently having mouth pain, it is time for them to see a dentist. In addition, your child should have a routine dental checkup every six months because they can provide deep cleaning, identify dental complications and treatments and ensure that your child’s oral hygiene is on point. Did you know that mouth and gum disease left unchecked could lead to a condition called sepsis? Sepsis is when the germs from the teeth can spread to the rest of the body through the circulatory system and could make a person’s body very sick. Sometimes this can lead to hospitalization. Most often people (especially kids) think of the here and now, but taking time to teach and to model great habits such as brushing teeth while in this moment not only affects your child’s future smile, but benefits the smile of the next generation to come.
If you need more resources and ideas to help motivate your child to brush his or her teeth, contact the school nurse’s office at Glen and we’d be glad to assist. Also, if you need a regular dentist or insurance for your child, you can contact the Wicomico County Health Department at 410-749-1244 for switchboard operator or visit their website at www.wicomicohealth.org.

👻SPED Self Contained - Ms. Krider's Class👻
We like to move it, move it....we like to move it, move it! Hopefully you do not have that "Madagascar" movie stuck in your head now! In October our scholars will start a unit on motion—the changing of position or location—and the push and pull forces that are needed to make something move. We will read books where the main character explores how push and pull forces apply to a familiar setting—the playground. In the lessons that follow, scholars will explore and experiment with the forces that make things move in a variety of ways. We welcome parents or guardians to visit our classroom at any time. Please continue contacting us on DOJO, via email or by phone with any questions/concerns.
✍️ESSAY CONTEST✍️
🎃Grade 2🎃
This month second grade scholars will be wrapping up our Cinderella Around the World unit and beginning our Exploring Habitats Unit in ELA. We will be introducing nonfiction text and learning how to use text features to help us understand nonfiction text. Students are working on tapping out sounds and identifying different phonics patterns to make them stronger readers and writers. In Social Studies scholars will continue to explore communities and parts of a community. We will continue to work on making tens, fact fluency, number stories, and using math tools to be successful in math. If you want to help your scholar be successful, please continue to read at home with your scholar daily and discuss what you read, and find ways to practice math skills in your daily life. One easy way to do this would be to ask your child to sort the coins you may have laying around and tell you the coin name and value. If they are already able to accurately identify their coin names you could have the scholars add the total value.

Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes each day. Ask your child to describe the genre they are reading and what they learn during the reading time each day. In Math students will explore various applications for multiplication. They classify shapes by properties and develop formulas for finding the area of a rectangle. In language arts we are working on decoding multisyllabic words using the 6 syllable types. In math we will be finishing up our unit on volume and moving onto whole number place value and operations. In that unit we will be exploring exponents and whole number place value in our new unit. In Social Studies we are focusing on The Constitution, as well as the branches of government and how the system is set up as a series of checks and balances. Finally, in science we continue to explore our place in the universe. We will be moving into Earth’s systems soon and looking at how the different biomes interact with each other. We are doing great things in fifth grade and it’s because the students are working so hard.

School Improvement Plan
Title 1 schoolwide schools create school improvement plans (SIPs) to provide a quality program to meet the needs of all students. The SIP is written with input from teachers, parents, administrators, and other community members. Multiple data points including attendance, assessments, discipline reports and overall climate of the school are reviewed to identify areas of strength and challenge. Strategies are written into the plan to focus on the needs of the students.
However, there may be times when everyone is not in agreement with the priorities or direction of the plan and may feel more attention should have been directed to other areas. In these circumstances, you are encouraged to share your comments and/or concerns regarding your school’s SIP with us.
Right to Know
As a Title I school, we are required to inform you of your right to request information on the qualifications of the teacher and/or the instructional assistant who will be working with your child. Please rest assured that we have worked diligently to ensure that all staff members meet the requirements set forth by the Maryland State Department of Education. If you would like to exercise your right to request this information, you may email or send a letter using US mail to the Director of Human Resources or to my attention. You will receive a response from the Director of Human Resources within 30 days of the original request. We look forward to serving you and your student this year.
