From The Admin Team Aug. 2, 2021
Bernice Kiker Elementary School
Personal Note From Mrs. Matheny
If you are a new Kiker Family, I can't wait to meet you. If you are a returning Kiker Family, I can't wait to see you again!
As you are aware, there have been unexpected changes for the 2021-2022 school year, and our admin team is busy planning for the safest return for our students and staff within our control. AISD has shared this two page document with protocols for our school. We are committed to following the AISD guidelines for the safety of all. As we move from stage 3 to stage 4 and possibly stage 5, our district leaders are diligently reviewing the protocols, and we stand ready to make any adjustments necessary.
I want all our families, new and returning, to know that the Kiker staff will be extremely vigilant in following the AISD safety protocols. We took the safety precautions seriously last year, and our teachers did an excellent job of ensuring our students did the same. As an educator, I must accept that there are many decisions being made outside of my control. I am prepared to receive them and do my best to make them work for our school community. As a parent, I told my own daughter that she will be wearing a mask every day, and I will do the same. As your principal, I will model the district's stance of highly encouraging masks for all.
I wish I could tell you what the first day of school will look like, but as we learned from our experience last year, plans change in an instant. It is certainly an unsettling time for many but know that our admin team is committed to our community and to facing the challenges that this year may bring. Thank you for your continued grace and understanding.
Please join us for the many events this week to reconnect with our Kiker Community and welcome new families.

AISD's Mask Recommendations
AISD stands with the CDC on their recommendations:
On Tuesday, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated their guidelines, recommending masks for all individuals indoors regardless of vaccination status.
Why it matters: With school starting in about three weeks, the more people who wear a mask and get vaccinated, the better position schools will be in to start. AISD strongly encourages masks, but it's up to parents and students to make sure they follow the CDC’s recommendation because Governor Greg Abbott’s order prevents mask mandates in schools.
- This change brings the CDC into alignment with Austin Public Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics, which have both previously updated their guidelines to recommend mask-wearing indoors for everyone.
Local Impact: On Monday, Alexandra Copeland, director of health services for Austin ISD, told the school board that masks were a big reason Austin classrooms were safe last school year.
