Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings, Panther Nation!
Just this past week we officially announced our valedictorian and salutatorians for the Class of 2019 (scroll down for picture)! Congratulations to Mikayla McMillan (valedictorian) and our six salutatorians: Matthew Nguyen, Emily Silvis, Jaci Glassick, Makenna Wells, Karina Sotelo, and Breanna Taylor! This is quite an accomplishment and I cannot be more proud of these Panthers for not only their high level of academic success, but each is also involved in at least one club, sport, or program in our school. Way to represent...RAWR!
Spring break is right around the corner. We have one more week before we get the opportunity to recharge our batteries. This year break will be April 1st-5th and school will resume on April 8th for the home stretch!
Immediately below you will see some screenshots taken from a video I came across on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VIy0cx-a_c). I thought you would enjoy a nice throwback to Old Corona.
Respectfully,
Antonio Gonzalez, Ed.D.
Proud Principal

Festival of the Arts
The Third Annual Festival of the Arts was another smashing success. Thousands of people visited Heritage Park on March 16th to see our district's students' (elementary, intermediate, and high school) art work on display. It truly was quite impressive! Various forms of art could be found including paintings, drawings, photographs, graphic arts, ceramics, video production, clothing designs, and even performances such as spoken word, music, and dance.
I am proud to state that Corona High School took first place again in the ceramics competition. This year's theme was Spring has Sprung. In the student film competition, our very own Panthers took second place with Paper Fighters 3000; a short film by Avedis Ayvazian, Phillip Peterson, and Seth Steiger. Their work can be viewed by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=a03yf4QxEUw&app=desktop.
Also, many schools showcased some of their top performers in music and dance on the main stage and our boys and girls FPK were a crowd favorite once again! What an amazing display of artistic talent from our district's student-artists. I cannot wait for next year's show.
Here is a list of some of our Panther artists receiving special recognition (photographs of all these pieces are farther below):
- Jay Carillo, 1st Place in Film Photography for The Evolution
- Isabella Arevalo, 1st Place for her Skateboard Deck in Graphic Art Design
- Jeymmy Vargas-Gomez, 2nd Place for her 2-D Mixed Media piece, Escape from Hell

Aviation
On March 9th, the Corona High School Aviators got to experience real world flight, some for the very first time! As part of the EAA Young Eagles program, pilots volunteer to take students up in their own airplanes to show them what flying is like. The students had a great time getting to put their simulator skills to use. They experienced ground school, preflight, and actual real world flight. Some students got to fly the plane, while others were passengers. This video is courtesy of Mr. Peterson and can be seen on my (@CoronaPrincipal) Twitter page: https://twitter.com/CoronaPrincipal/status/1109188914852458496. If you are interested in learning more about our Aviation pathway, please contact Mr. Peterson (cpeterson@cnusd.k12.ca.us).
Engineering
Recently, our STEM Engineering students participated in the Fahrenheit 451 race to the alarm competition. Students built their own carts based upon the novel by Ray Bradbury. This has become an annual event and lots of fun for students and teachers involved!
Visual/Performing Arts
Theatre Arts 2018-19 Season
The much anticipated Disney's The Little Mermaid finally debuted on March 14th! If you missed it, there are a couple opportunities to still experience the show. You will be wowed by the talent and the costumes! I was fortunate enough to catch the show on March 22nd and I was truly and absolutely amazed by the production quality and the acting/singing skills of our thespians. There's singing, dancing (including tap!), laughing, and even some swimming and flying! DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!! Remaining shows are on March 22nd at 7:00 pm and March 23rd at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. You may get your tickets at the door or online by clicking here: www.showtix4u.com.

NJROTC
-
Corona High School offers many exciting and educational challenges that are fun and both educational and career driven. NJROTC is one of many programs that offer cadets a chance to excel in discipline, leadership, sports, drill, community service and be part of an exciting program that prepares them for everyday life’s challenges, whether it be college, the workforce, or the military. We have two dedicated retired military instructors/mentors who look forward to engaging new cadets and offer a variety of skill sets to assist each cadet with their individual needs. Cadets earn a P.E. credit and can join for all four years or just give it a try for a year. Come on by and check us out. Our doors are open to everyone or visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Corona-High-Njrotc-248722711817419/.
Annual Mess Night was held on March 15th at the American Legion Hall in Corona. Cadets participated in a military traditional dinner followed by DJ/Dancing and lots of fun! Our cadets work very hard all year long and this is a great opportunity for them to just have fun!
District Math Field Day will be held on April 13th at Corona High School. Each year NJROTC provides a lunch (fundraiser) for participants and earns around $600 in profit. Fundraising help offset the cost of orientation tours, The Military Ball and Mess Nights. Be sure to stoip buy and support NJROTC at Math Field Day!
Physical Fitness Test
It is that time of year again: the physical fitness test! Testing has begun and will continue being administered throughout the month of March. It is important that we test 100% of our freshman class, so please encourage your student to take this test serious as it has class scheduling implications. If students do not pass this test, they MUST be in a PE class sophomore year, and will NOT be eligible to take the summer school PE course for advancement. This applies to our students with impacted schedules due to special programs. Follow this link for more information about the test: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/pf/overview.asp.

Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project
"Since its inception in 1982, the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) has offered a once in a lifetime opportunity for California’s youth in Sacramento. The Sacramento Leadership Conference (SLC) brings 120 high school students from throughout the state to participate in a week-long, intensive leadership program. Conference participants attend powerful workshops and seminars that enhance leadership skills, academic preparedness, self-esteem, cultural awareness, and provide an understanding of state and local government. Programming at all CLYLP programs including the SLC is based on CLYLP’s four curriculum “C’s”: Community, Culture, College, and Careers.
Participants will leave with valuable information and tools that they can begin using when they return to school in the Fall. Most importantly, students will leave with new friendships from throughout the state of California. Housing, meals, program materials and transportation to and from the conference are provided at no cost to the participants or their families."
