Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,

Term 3 began on Monday. Thank you to all of the families who have been so incredible in pivoting to new norms and honoring the numerous DC Health and DCPS protocols in place, to ensure the safety of our school community stakeholders.

Although there are only a few in-person seats remaining, please be mindful that we are continuing to share those offers with families. This process can only move as quickly as families accept or decline seat offers. In addition, we will continue to review available data and follow the guidance of DCPS and DC Health, to determine if or when additional in-person cohorts may be able to open in the future.

Additionally, it has been brought to our attention that families may have received a District-wide robocall regarding the possibility of available seats, not taking into account any schools that have already filled most of their allotted in-person seats. We will continue to follow the protocols we have been sharing with families over the months, which includes moving through the waitlist, as offers are accepted or denied. If a seat becomes available, will certainly be in contact. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Hyde-Addison Elementary Schools

We are excited to celebrate Black History Month at Hyde-Addison! We encourage students to spend time in the Hyde-Addison Resource Hub on your child's Canvas. There is a new section called "Enjoy the Joy of Diversity at Hyde-Addison" and this month there are three interactive virtual classrooms (shown below) that students can explore to learn about Black history.

We encourage students to make artwork, write biography summaries, and take photos of the many different ways that they celebrate Black culture, people, and history. We want to see the great work they are doing and the fun they are having, so please help them upload photos or other files to this Padlet. They can check out all of the ways that their friends are celebrating, too!

We have been reading the book "Scribble Stones" with students and talking about the Kindness Rocks Project as part of our core value work. We invite families to join us in spreading kindness with the Hyde-Addison community and in your neighborhoods. To participate, children decorate rocks with uplifting symbols and words (paint pens, paint, or sharpies work the best on the rocks), and then leave the rocks for others to find. It brightens their day! You can also achieve the same outcome by drawing on paper or making cards- so don't let a lack of rocks or paint deter you from participating.

We will display the stones that are painted by students so they can be a visible reminder of our community's kindness. They will be outside of Hyde-Addison (please don't take those but feel free to make additions!) and we will also feature some student creations each week in the newsletter for all to enjoy. This Sunday is the Super Bowl! Any students who are interested are encouraged to wear any sports jersey of their choosing for a continued celebration.

Please note that Schoolwide Meeting will now be shared by classroom teachers during morning meeting and will not take place on Wednesday afternoons anymore. Youth from any school now have the option to pick up free weekly Market Boxes at 1) Excel Academy, 2) Langdon ES, or 3) McKinley HS. Boxes are distributed every Thursday from 10 AM – 3 PM and contain 7 days’ worth of breakfast, lunch, & supper ingredients. Learn more and sign up by clicking here.
