LAKEVIEW ELEMENTARY
JANUARY 2022 NEWSLETTER
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome back and happy 2022!
As you all know, I took a short leave of absence right before winter break. It was unexpected but very much needed. I have never been very good at taking care of myself. I've spent most of my adult life caring for all those around me, and I guess it finally caught up with me. I needed a break so that I could set resources in place for myself, and begin to heal my own mental health. I could not have taken this self-care time without the support from not only the entire Lakeview staff, but also the unconditional support from Dr. Lyons and Dr. Eidahl. I truly can't thank them enough for not only helping me begin my journey to heal, but for also stepping in and supporting Lakeview staff and students in my absence.
Thank you to everyone who sent texts and emails of support. Thank you for understanding and for continuing to support Lakeview staff and all students. This is an amazing community that continues to support one another in our most challenging hour. I appreciate this community very much!
I'm glad to be back in the building! While I am still working on healing, I am ready to be fully engaged and present so that we can finish this second half of the school year strong.... like we always do!
Take care,
Ms. Tabor

DECEMBER MORNING PLEDGE - HOLIDAY STYLE
RECESS, WINTER & SNOW
Please be sure to label all items with your child's name. This will ensure that their items will get back to them if they happen to forget or misplace them in the building or on the playground.
Recess will be hard surfaces only for students without snow pants and boots.
ADOPT-A-CHILD SUPPORTER SUCCESS - THANK YOU!
Thank you for donating to our program this year. Without your support, this would definitely not be possible. You helped to support multiple families and children this year and they are so grateful for your support.
We have always tried our hardest to maintain confidentiality. We don’t share who donates and we don’t share who receives. The downside of this process is that you don’t get all of the “thank you” messages. We are including some of the messages we received this year from the families you helped.
“I’m so very overwhelmed and grateful. I truly have no words. This has been a tough couple of years for our family and a situation I never ever pictured us in. The generosity is something I will never forget and is such a help for our family. You have no idea how much it means!”
“I just wanted to tell you, the staff at the Solon Schools and everyone in the community THANK YOU so much for the wonderful gift cards! I can't express how amazing the Schools and community has been since I’ve lived in Solon! You are all amazing and these gifts will really help with this Christmas!”
Thanks again for supporting this program. We say it every year, but this program would not be possible without each and every one of you.
With thanks,
Amy, Kris & Becky
WEATHER RELATED INFORMATION
Weather Related Announcements and District App
The winter months in Iowa bring challenging weather patterns, which often result in disruption to the normal school day or week. If a delay, early release or cancellation is necessary, we will do our very best to make decisions early, providing you the time to make the necessary accommodations. We encourage you to download our app designed for Android or Apple, “Solon CSD”, for the earliest notifications. Weather related announcements are also communicated through email, social media and local media outlets. Please make sure
your contact information is current in PowerSchool.
Informational Sources when Making Weather Related Decisions
We participate in informational meetings with the National Weather Service out of the Quad Cities for most recent and accurate updates when severe weather is forecasted. Depending on the severity of the storm, conversations through webcast or phone occur mid-day prior and following morning at 4:30AM. Our Director of Transportation assesses roads throughout the district the evening before and next morning, while also gathering information from the Johnson County Roads Dept.
Weather related announcement timing
Weather related announcements are made by 5:45AM. A cancellation or delay may be announced the evening before. If a 2-hour delay is announced the evening before and a change is made to cancellation, this will be announced prior to 7AM.
Parent Decision
We honor every family’s decision related to weather and travel. If school is not delayed or cancelled and you are uncomfortable with the current conditions, please contact your child’s school to report the weather-related absence and it will be excused. We support your decision.
A National Weather Service Warning
When the National Weather Service issues a “warning” the district will most likely delay or cancel school. During the month of January, we typically experience extreme cold resulting from wind chills. A warning means that wind chill values are expected to fall to -30F or lower.
Calendar
We believe the impact of in person, classroom instruction cannot be duplicated virtually. Days missed, resulting from weather will be added to the calendar at the end of the school year.
BASP LATE STARTS/CLOSURES REMINDER
- School closings due to inclement winter weather. The BASP program will be CLOSED on days when the SCSD closes or dismisses school early due to inclement weather.
- BASP closing due to inclement winter weather. The program will CLOSE on in-service or vacation days due to inclement weather. The program director will notify local television and radio stations.
- Unscheduled school delays (LATE STARTS) due to inclement weather. The program will be open 2 hours late as well as school. On 2 hour late starts the program will open at 8:15 AM and will remain open until school begins. Breakfast is not offered on late start mornings. If school is later canceled for the entire day due to the inclement weather, the program will remain open until 10:30 AM to allow parents time to pick up their children.
