Essex County Newark Tech - Jenabu C. Williams, Principal
December 2023 - January 2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we embark on a new year filled with endless possibilities, I am delighted to extend my warmest wishes to all of you. Happy New Year! May this year bring you and your loved ones abundant joy, prosperity, and good health.
As we embrace the freshness of 2024, we also commemorate the rich tapestry of our history and culture as we observe Black History Month. This annual celebration provides us with a valuable opportunity to honor African Americans' remarkable achievements, resilience, and contributions throughout history. It is a time to reflect on their profound impact on our society and to reaffirm our commitment to equality, justice, and inclusivity.
At Essex County Schools of Technology - Newark Tech, we recognize the importance of fostering an environment where diversity is celebrated and everyone feels valued and empowered. Our commitment to promoting understanding, empathy, and cultural appreciation is at the heart of our educational mission.
As partners in your child's academic journey, I encourage you to take this opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with your family about the significance of Black History Month. Together, let us explore the stories of trailblazers, activists, artists, scientists, and leaders who have left an indelible mark on history. Let us honor their legacies by cultivating a spirit of unity, compassion, and respect within our school community and beyond.
Once again, I wish you all a Happy New Year filled with hope, happiness, and prosperity. May unity and resilience inspire us as we celebrate Black History Month and strive to build a brighter future together.
Warm regards,
Jenabu C. Williams, MPA, M.Ed

🏫New Staff Interviews 🏫
Get To Know Ms. Hossain; Interview by Lyanette Martinez ‘25
Lyanette: What inspired you to become a teacher?
Ms. Hossain: When I was in 7th grade, one of my friends struggled in chemistry in the first quarter, so I helped her, and she improved a lot. To see that significant improvement and joy on her face, that's when I said, “Wow! That's something that I can do.” To see her happy made me happy. From that moment on, I focused on teaching and helping others; I like teaching kids and seeing them benefit from that. I wanted to choose a job where I could continue that passion.
Lyanette: What do you enjoy about your position? How do you view your role?
Ms. Hossain: The number one thing to me is focusing on the kids; the students are what make this job great. This role, in general, as a teacher is similar to carrying out the responsibilities of a parent or a second guardian.
Lyanette: What brought you to work at Newark Tech? What do you think of Newark Tech so far?
Ms. Hossain: On my way to college, I passed by this school multiple times. I was curious about Newark Tech, so I decided to apply here. I love Newark Tech so far. I was initially nervous, but the environment, the students, and the staff have been amazing and beautiful.
Lyanette: What is your strategy to connect with and engage students to learn? What are some of your most rewarding experiences as a teacher?
Ms. Hossain: Number one, for me, is to build an actual relationship with the students and get to know them. Before I start teaching, I get to know about their lives and how their days have been. Whenever I see students smiling, it is very rewarding.
Lyanette: What goals did you set for yourself for this school year? Any goals set for your students?
Ms.Hossain: This is my first year teaching, so my goal is to adapt well with the kids and the staff and live up to the expectations that people have for me. No matter what grades they score, I would want my students to try their best at whatever they do.
Lyanette: What advice would you give to students who are struggling in your class, and how do you help them succeed?
Ms. Hossain: Take it easy, don't worry, and come to me whenever you need help, and I will always help. I take things step-by-step and get to the root cause of why they may not understand a topic. If it is a difficult lesson, I will simplify it so they can understand it.
Lyanette: What are some of your hobbies and interests? What are some of your favorite books or movies?
Ms. Hossain: I like reading, watching dramas, and going camping. One of my favorite books is Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini; it's a historical tragedy.
Get To Know Ms. West; Interview by: Lyanette Martinez ‘25
Lyanette: What inspired you to become a teacher?
Ms. West: I always wanted to be a teacher since I was in third grade. It was appealing to me. When I went to college, I actually didn’t go for education first. I had two other careers before I came into teaching. But I was ready for a transition, so I became a teacher.
Lyanette: Are there any specific quotes related to education that have inspired you?
Ms. West: I like Mr. Williams’ saying, “Knowledge is power.” I believe education is the key to anybody’s future. A high school education is important to understand what is out in the world, even if you don’t attend college afterward.
Lyanette: What are some of your hobbies and interests? What are some of your favorite books or movies?
Ms. West: I love to read fiction, do yoga, and do home improvement projects. Many years ago, I put together my kitchen with my mom. I don’t have one favorite book, but The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty impressed me. I love the Harry Potter book series.
Lyanette: What do you enjoy about being a teacher?
Ms. West: I love watching those “a-ha” moments when something we’ve talked about in class clicks for students, and you can see the lightbulb go off.
Lyanette: What brought you to work at Newark Tech?
Ms. West: Some time ago, I left my old position and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I missed my students, so I decided to come back into education. I applied for many jobs, but Newark Tech was the right fit.
Lyanette: What are some of your most rewarding experiences as a teacher?
Ms. West: Seeing my students mature and graduate, then watching all the awesome things they do after high school.
Lyanette: What goals did you set for yourself and your students for this school year?
Ms.West: To get to know my students, the other teachers, and the administration. I also want to get a feel for the culture of this school. My goal is always for my students to be successful.
Lyanette: Are you interested in school activities, like pep rallies or sports events?
Ms. West: I was an advisor for SkillsUSA, so I tend to lean more toward things like that.
Lyanette: What advice would you give to struggling students in your class?
Ms. West: Be persistent. Then see me and tell me where you are having issues.
