Mrs. Mattis and Mrs. Burrows were awarded $1,143 from the Wayland Union Education Foundation's Innovation Grant for the purchase of Wired Keyboards and Lightning Keyboard Adapters for their 6th-grade ELA classrooms at WUMS. They were able to purchase 80 keyboards and 80 lightning adapters to connect the keyboards to student iPads.

The students have enjoyed using the keyboards to type their CommonLit unit essays and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning paragraphs. Their teachers believe their typing skills and writing production will continue to improve throughout the year with the use of these keyboards.

On January 25th, two Wayland Middle School Students performed in the Michigan Schools Vocal Music Association State Honors Choir at DeVos Hall in Grand Rapids. Ariel White (Left, 8th Grade) and Elaina Thomas (Right, 6th Grade) sang in this delightful concert.

The Wayland Union Middle School Spelling Bee went 13 rounds and resulted in Audra Nielson being the school's Spelling Bee Champion. The winning word was "insufferable." Ariel White came in second place, Lena Phillips in third, and Brayden Miner in fourth. All four students will be moving on to the Allegan Country Spelling Bee which will be held February 27 at the Otsego Middle School Auditorium. Jackson White is the runner-up and will fill in if any of the other contestants cannot make it.

Did you know Wayland has it’s very own heart hero and that she attends Pine Street Elementary? This year Raihlynn is a youth ambassador for the American Heart Challenge! Raihlynn was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. She is a hard worker, kind classmate, and all around amazing kid! Raihlynn has designed her very own t-shirt to raise funds for the American Heart Association this year! $5 of each purchase will be donated to our campaign. The link to order is below. T-shirts can be ordered from now through February 8th! If your child attends Wayland Union Schools they will be sent home with them. If they do not attend school they can be picked up February 28th, from 2:30-4:30 at Pine Street Elementary.
