Field Day Reminder
ELM STREET SCHOOL FIELD DAY REMINDER!
Field Day is Monday, June 12th
Please make note of the following checklist:
WEAR SUNSCREEN- please put sunscreen on your child before school.
USE BUG SPRAY with deet- several events are outdoors and one is in the woods. There is a high level of ticks in this area. (Please note: Due to the potential for allergic reactions, we are unable to apply sunscreen or bug spray to your child.)
T-SHIRTS- Please have your child wear their field day t-shirt which is their assigned team color for the day. In addition, please send your child in with a second shirt that matches and/or is close in color to their assigned team color if possible.
CHANGE OF CLOTHES/TOWEL: We will be having water events, so be sure to include a complete change of clothing (underclothes and a second pair of sneakers too), as well as a towel.
LUNCH- Students will be able to purchase lunch or bring a bag lunch from home.
WATER BOTTLE- Please have your child bring in a full water bottle with their name on it. Water refill stations will be provided to your child while outside.
SNEAKERS ARE RECOMMENDED! Please no flip-flops, sandals, crocs. etc.
Volunteers:
Thank you for volunteering your time! This day is a special day for Elm Students and Staff and we couldn’t do it without you!
Please be sure to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled station to check-in at the Volunteer table.
Thanks again for your support!
Battle of the Books Finale
On June 6th, students in grades 3-5 competed in the Battle of the Books. Students did an amazing job working with their teams to read the books to prepare. Congratulations to the winners:
Grade 3: Northeastern Readers
Grade 4: Da Supa Squishmallows
Grade 5: The 5 Crusty Cheeseballs
K-2 STEM Update from Miss. Flanagan
Thank you to all the families who have returned library books to me! I will be sending out reminder emails to those families who have not returned books yet.
We have had a great first year in STEM! Over the last few weeks K-2 students were introduced to their final robot of the school year! Indi cars challenge students to problem solve and collaborate to code the robot using colors. Students have LOVED this robot!
3-5 STEM Update from Miss Flanagan
Third, fourth, and fifth graders were introduced to the “Gripper,” which is an attachment on Dash that allows students to code the robot to pick up items. Other students have worked on controlling Dash with an iPad to move around the classroom and avoid obstacles.

Math Info from Mrs. Torigian
Is Summer Slide Real?
Unfortunately yes; research has shown that students can lose up to 2 months of reading skills and 2 ½ months of math skills over one summer depending on their grade level. The good news is that there are easy and fun ways to prevent this loss of learning and maintain or even make gains over the summer.
The most important thing to do is keep your children active and thinking over the summer. Preventing summer slide does not equate with giving your children worksheets to do each week. Instead, encourage them to play outside, play board games, participate in imaginative play, and read for pleasure!
In order to keep those young mathematicians’ brains active, we have a whole section of our Family Math Site dedicated to activities and games your students can access to keep their minds engaged and math skills sharp. While we do not require students to complete any specific task, we do encourage them to engage their mathematical brain for 60-90 minutes a week on activities of their choice. If you scroll to the bottom of the web page, there are also printable packets for each grade level if that is what your child enjoys.
We want our Walpole students to have a wonderful summer, but we don’t want them to lose all the hard work they put in during the school year! We hope you all find time to relax and recharge over the summer while staying active and engaged in your choice of fun learning activities.
