The world might be an exaggeration. However, in the first 30 days, New York has definitely lived up to the expectations that were placed upon the state when it legalized mobile sports betting last year, expanding access to the gaming opportunity across the state.

A statement released by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday revealed that mobile sports betting operators have reported $1.98 billion in wagers since the first apps launched in the state on Jan. 8.

Hochul’s announcement comes after the state set a record for the biggest one-month handle in January. Despite missing the first week of the month, the $1.6 billion handle still trumped the $1.3 billion New Jersey’s operators took in October of last year.

“I’m happy the Gaming Commission proceeded with haste to get the determination of the operators in place two weeks earlier than anticipated,” said Pretlow, D-Mount Vernon, who chairs the Assembly Committee on Racing and Wagering.

That figure does not count bets taken in the past week, including most of the Super Bowl wagers. That report is scheduled to come out this Friday.

Hochul: Mobile Sports Betting an ‘Economic Engine’

The governor’s release cited data from gaming technology vendor GeoComply. That report said nearly 1.8 million unique accounts were used over the first 30 days of legal online sports betting in the state. Those accounts generated 187 million transactions to ensure users were located within New York so they could legally place their wagers.

The nearly $2 billion in handle has generated $138 million in revenue for the sportsbooks. That, in turn, has created $70.6 million in tax revenue for the state.

With football season now complete, the betting figures will likely slip a little until the NCAA men’s basketball tournament that starts next month. While the Super Bowl is the biggest one-day activity in US sports betting, the tournament is considered the biggest event overall for gamblers.

Since the online apps rolled out on Jan. 8, New Yorkers have wagered more than $600 million on football. Gamblers have bet more than $540 million on basketball.

What’s Next in New York?

Expanding gaming remains a key topic for the New York legislature. This year, lawmakers will consider awarding the remaining three full casino resort licenses a year early. BetMGM is now available at Casino del Mar at La Concha Resort in San Juan. The sports book operator and the hotel reached a related agreement last September.

BetMGM now is accepting wagers at the San Juan-based beach resort through 12 kiosks and five betting windows. A full-scale BetMGM retail sportsbook is set to open at La Concha Resort later this year,” according to a statement issued by the gaming company.

Puerto Rico Could Be Positive for BetMGM

Additionally, Puerto Rico is a major tourist destination, and locals are big fans of traditional American sports, including Major League Baseball (MLB), the NBA, and the NFL. Sports betting taxes are also attractive on the island at just six percent for wagers placed in land-based casinos, and 12 percent on mobile bets.

BetMGM’s debut in Puerto Rico comes as experts are forecasting $7.6 billion in wagers being placed on Super Bowl LVI, which takes place Sunday. The NFL’s biggest tilt is usually the most wagered-on sporting event in the US on an annual basis.

Market Expansion Still Important

BetMGM’s move into Puerto Rico arrives soon after the operator launched in New York – a market that’s fast on its way to becoming US sports wagering royalty — and as it plans to debut in Ontario, Canada later this year.

Forging into new markets remains vital for sportsbook operators in their efforts to achieve scale and boost top-line results. It’s also something Wall Street actively monitors in evaluating gaming companies 메이저토토 with sports betting exposure. So is profitability, and BetMGM checks that box.

Last month, the company forecast a 50 percent surge in revenue for 2022, while noting it will be profitable on the basis of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in 2023.

In its simplest terms, proxy betting is the facilitation of gambling on behalf of another individual. In the New Jersey DraftKings case, gaming regulators say an individual inside the state routinely placed sports bets online through the sportsbook platform, based on directives from a man living in Florida.

The case dates back to 2019 when the Florida high roller established his DraftKings account while visiting New Jersey. He then worked with a friend who is a permanent New Jersey resident to bet on his behalf.

The DGE says the $150,000 settlement is for DraftKings “negligently allowing a patron to engage in proxy wagering.”

New Jersey’s Casino Control Act, which governs all forms of legal commercial gambling aside from lottery and charitable games, forbids proxy betting.

Alleged Scheme

New Jersey gaming regulators alleged 먹튀검증 that the high-stakes sports bettor in Florida had an informal agreement with DraftKings. That allowed him to wager as much as $50,000 per game remotely through his associate. The state also contended that the whale attended Super Bowl LIV in February of 2020 at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida as an invited guest of DraftKings, and sat in the sportsbook’s suite.

The state’s probe was assisted by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. It concluded that the VIP placed bets through New Jersey’s DraftKings platform while inside Hard Rock Stadium watching the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl.

He used the same friend once New Jersey regulators began closely monitoring his play. DraftKings banned the customer from its platform in October of 2020.

The individual’s home state of Florida briefly had legal mobile sports betting last year after Governor Ron DeSantis (R) allowed the Seminole Tribe to run online sportsbooks. However, federal courts have stopped such iGaming, as a legal challenge regarding the tribe gaining exclusive rights to sports betting plays out.

Larger Probe Ongoing

The $150,000 fine is little more than a slap on the wrist for the sports betting leader. But a DGE inquiry against another company stands to come with much graver repercussions, should elements of wrongdoing be proven.

Last year, an anonymous complaint was filed with the state containing a myriad of allegations claiming that Evolution Gaming is operating in illegal foreign markets. Evolution is the largest operator of live dealer table games in the United States.

Former NFL star Marcus Allen is the grand marshal for the race. He will let drivers know when to start their engines.

The running back played 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs. Earlier, he played for the USC Trojans and was awarded the Heisman Trophy.
