Message From the Superintendent
The National Honor Society, under the direction of Mrs. Nadine Pietrowski, and the local Boy and Girl Scouts create and facilitate the annual memorial. The addition of this video raised the level of awareness and connection for our students.
I truly believe that we need to continue to honor our veterans and those who currently serve to remind our young people that we live in the greatest country on Earth and have a duty and responsibility to honor our freedom.
This weekend may be filled with parades, barbecues, and sales, but we need to take a few minutes to think about and thank those who served and sacrificed so that we have the ability to enjoy the unofficial start of summer.
Police Activity VEM May 24, 2018
Once the Middlesex Police entered the scene and announced the Lockdown, except for the superintendent putting the other schools into a Shelter in Place, the administration took direction from the police. The police advised the superintendent that a perimeter had been set up to ensure no students would accidentally be confronted or find themselves in the search zone and to release the MHS students for a normal dismissal. The incident occurred at VEM at 1:46 PM and the MHS students were not dismissed until 2:30 PM. The police felt that the students would not be at any increased risk. They also advised that Parker and Hazelwood Schools could be dismissed at 3:10 PM.
After much discussion with police it was decided that there would be a delayed and controlled release of students from VEM and Watchung. This release was done incrementally beginning with the oldest students so that they would be able to meet up easily with younger siblings. Multiple Honeywell Instant Alerts were sent to update parents.
Today Mr. Sirna and Mr. Regan met with every student in smaller grade level groups to tell them exactly what transpired and to ensure they had adequate time to process the information. The school counselors were available all day for students and staff who needed additional support.
Next week a debriefing of the incident and the safety protocols will be reviewed by MPD with school administrators. Routines are being examined and re-training of all staff will take place next week to reinforce safety protocols and procedures.
I thank the parents who took the time to write an email to me, and I will be sharing your thoughts with others in the district. This is the link to the letter that I sent out via eblast yesterday to parents and the community in case you missed it: https://goo.gl/MjbXcu

Did you know.....?
Next week an information piece will be included in The Nest for parents of children currently in grades 8-11. The Project Graduation Committee NEEDS YOUR HELP!
There are events that are traditionally in place for graduating seniors that may have to be discontinued unless more parents volunteer a few hours of time to assist with the planning and preparation...Don't miss out on being involved in your child's school programs at the high school level...high school kids still need their parents to be actively involved!

Tips for Talking with Kids about Media Violence
Does the violence in video games adversely affect kids? The research says it can. Does news coverage of violent events affect kids? Also, yes.
“Remote Exposure” has even been identified as impactful, when children have knowledge “that something traumatic has occurred, but haven’t experienced it directly.”
What is a parent or caring adult to do to address these concerns? Common Sense Media shares age-appropriate guidelines for conversations with our kids, such as distinguishing between “real and pretend” for ages 2-6 and “explaining context” for ages 7-12.
For teens, we should hear them out, let them share what they know and then offer our own insights. The widespread access to news and disturbing images DOES have a negative impact on their developing minds, and they are looking to us to have these conversations. Find specific pointers for each age band at Common Sense Media.
