Supporting Academic Growth
Did you know that GLOBE doubled the size of our academic coaching staff this year? And these coaches are hard at work, ensuring the teachers and students all get the support they need to succeed. Here’s just one example of what that looks like, from Lower Campus Curriculum Coach Lisa Dibble:
“One of my favorite parts of my job is collaborating with teachers. A kindergarten teacher came to me about helping her extend some of her more proficient writers. I discovered that some of her students were not telling stories, but just writing a list. I showed her a couple of the checklists for kindergarten and 1st-grade writing that she could use with students for self-reflection.
We talked about how best to proceed, and she decided to take one of the checklists and reteach the lesson, emphasizing every story needs a character, and the story should say what the character did and felt. Afterward, I met with some of her students and worked with them to take their lists and turn them into a story. I can't wait to celebrate all their great writing at the end of the unit!”

February is Black History Month
Thanks so much to families who decorated a door for Black History Month! They are AMAZING! Click here to see them! On Friday's throughout February we are asking the GLOBE community to wear red, green, yellow, black, or a Black-history themed t-shirt.
Afternoon Parking
As a reminder, please do not park on Heritage Drive after Charles McDaniel Park or on Meadowvale Drive, as doing so makes two-way traffic nearly impossible. If you’d like a refresher on our afternoon dismissal policies and procedures, please click here.
In Art, Kindergarten students have been examining the work of artist Alma Thomas. Thomas was an artist from Columbus, Georgia, who relocated to Washington DC and became an educator and artist. At seventy-seven years old, she was the first African-American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum in New York. She drew inspiration for her abstract paintings from nature and from the exploration of space. Meanwhile, in Technology, students in 1st through 3rd grade are working hard on creating their very own books and stories, using a variety of technology tools.

Reading Bowl
Well done to our 4th and 5th grade Reading Bowl team. They competed in the DeKalb County Reading Bowl two weeks ago, winning 2nd place and a chance to compete in the Metro Schools Bowl with all the best teams across Metro Atlanta. On Saturday's Virtual Metro Bowl, they won 3 of their 4 rounds which earned them the 2nd place trophy with 350 points (the winning team had 390 points).
Congratulations to Lila Behravesh, Carmina Rho, Hana Weber, and Samuel Goldstein for qualifying to advance to the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair. Thank you to all of our families and students for your hard work that you put into your projects!
We've been having a great time with our 'morning announcements' at UC.
UC Spirit Week - February 15–17
We are half way through Spirit Week here at UC. The remaining daily themes will be Thursday: HBCU Day. Friday: 'unapologetically you' day.
Black History Month performance at UC, Friday, February 24.
We welcome parents/guardians of performers to the 1:30pm presentation at UC on Friday, February 24.
Visitors to UC may notice a large sculpture installation in the front hallway (near the front offices). This is a found object assemblage piece created by some of the 7th and 8th grade students, following their study of 20th century artist Louise Nevelson’s Sky Cathedral.
Music
Mentor Night: At last Friday’s Mentor Night, the students had a great time bonding, learning about leadership, mentoring, and being mentored. The special guest for the evening was Mr. Taylor Watts, leadership specialist and clinician, assistant band director at Kell High School in Marietta. Our 6th–8th grade mass band was also an awesome experience. What a group, and what a sound!
Visit to Atlanta Symphony Hall: On Tuesday, 6th through 8th grade orchestra students visited Atlanta Symphony Hall (ASO). They played Also sprach Zarathustra, Hungarian Dance No. 5, Conga del Fuego Nuevo, and a part of Pictures at an Exhibition (Baba Yaga and The Great Gate of Kiev).
Admissions - Lottery closes this Friday
If you are interested in enrolling a new student for 2023/24 you must submit an application via our website, not via school choice. The lottery closes on Friday, February 17. The drawing will be held on February 28. Click here for information, and don't forget to spread the word!
Read Across America Day
Kindergarten to 5th grade students will be celebrating Read Across America Day on March 2 and 3. All students will celebrate on their English day! Students will have the opportunity to choose a book that represents their culture or family history. They can dress up as a person from that book and if possible donate a copy of the book to their classroom library.
We hope to add additional books to the classroom libraries so they can be even more robust and reflective of our diverse community. Reading diverse and inclusive books in the coming weeks might help your student discover a character with whom they identify. You might even find one here on Read Across America's calendar for the year. Looking for even more diverse books? Click here.

Athletics
Boys basketball C Team
A huge well done to our boys basketball C team for making it all the way to the semi-finals. They won their elimination game 45-24 at GLOBE on February 9 and went on to compete in a very close run semi-final on Saturday at Briarwood Recreation Center. They lost 27-22, but they played extremely well as a team. Overall it was a fantastic season!

Parents are invited to attend the Basketball and Cheerleading Banquet which will be held on Thursday, February 23 at 6pm in the UC Cafeteria. This includes Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball (A, B and C Teams) and all Cheerleaders. Come help us celebrate a wonderful season!

Board of Directors
At our January board meeting, we thanked Luis Pacheco, who rolled off the board after years of dedicated service. The board elected Lorena Ferro Borges to take on the roles Luis had held: treasurer and finance committee chair. Lorena was previously GLOBE’s development committee co-chair, and in her day job, she serves as the head of finance and compliance for GSMA Mobile for Development Foundation. We are fortunate to benefit from her 10+ years of experience working in finance and compliance for non-profits in Georgia.
We are now accepting applications for the role of development committee co-chair. If you would like to be considered for this role, please email board chair Drew Reynolds.
Also at our January board meeting, we approved the calendar for the next academic year. In case you missed it: 2023-24 GLOBE calendar.
