We have begun the countdown for the remaining two weeks of the year, and what a year it has been! The final two weeks promise to be packed with many events that mark the end of the school year. Please read on further in the newsletter for a list of the upcoming events.
Last week, the school captains and I were invited to the Caltex Terminal at Banksmeadow. Each month the company hosts a BBQ, and the workers donate a gold coin to attend. Caltex collects this money and donates it to Banksmeadow PS at the end of each year. We are extremely appreciative of their generosity and very thankful for their donation.
On Tuesday we had a range of visitors who came to our school to educate the students and our community about the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. The students went for a walk in the enclosed area of the Banksia Scrub, made some bookmarks to take homes, learnt about the history of the school site, and met some animals from Featherdale Wildlife Park. It was a very educational day that was enjoyed by all. Our visitors commented on the excellent behaviour of our students and the interesting questions that they asked.
This Friday we will hold our Annual Presentation Day Assembly, where students will be recognised for their positive achievements and efforts at school this year. Parents and friends are invited to attend the assembly that will begin at 9:15am. All community members who have volunteered at the school throughout the year are also invited to attend our morning tea in the Library, following the assembly. This morning tea is a small celebration and a chance for our school to say thank you for all of the hard work and support that you have dedicated to Banksmeadow PS. I look forward to seeing you there. A reminder that all students should wear their normal school uniform on Friday, not their sports uniform.
Ms N Hoskins
Acting Principal
Don't forget the important events this week:
* Iceblock Days - this Thursday AND Friday - $1 each
* School will be open as normal on Thursday (Teachers Federation Stop Work Meeting)
* All students to wear their normal school uniform this Friday (not sports uniform)
* Please place all donations for the Christmas raffle in the school office. Don't forget to return your raffle tickets.
PBL Expected Behaviours
This fortnight's focus behaviours are:
- It's okay not to win
- Use my time wisely
Staff On Leave
You may have noticed that some of the familiar faces around the school have not been present of late. Mrs Moffat, Mrs Macdonald, Mrs Twitchings and Mrs Whittaker have all taken leave for the remainder of the year. All teachers are healthy and well, but have required the next couple of weeks off due to personal reasons. We may see some of them visit us for our special end of year events. We wish them all the best for their time off.
Changes to Staff in 2017 - Updated
In 2017 there will be quite a few changes to staff. As mentioned in last week's newsletter, we will say farewell to Mrs Annie Whittaker, who has been successful at gaining the position of Assistant Principal at Croydon PS. Mr Matt Johnstone will also be leaving us as he will be moving overseas.
Mrs Sharen Jack, teacher and Assistant Principal at Banksmeadow PS for 25 years, has been on leave in 2016. 2017 will mark her official retirement from teaching. Mrs Jack has been a dedicated and passionate teacher for the past 38 years, and a valued member of the Banksmeadow community. We wish her all the very best for the future and hope she enjoys her retirement!
Mrs Helene Moffat, teacher of Year 4/5, has been on leave since early in Term 4. Mrs Moffat had surgery on her shoulder and has begun a long recovery process. She will be taking leave for the duration of 2017 to spend time on her rehabilitation. We wish her all the best in her recovery and look forward to seeing her when she visits.
Mrs Carol Macdonald, Librarian and Reading Recovery teacher, has also decided to drop down to a part-time teaching position. She will be on leave until the end of the year but will return for two days per week in Term 1 2017.
Greek Orthodox Scripture - Expression of Interest
Every Thursday afternoon, all students participate in Scripture lessons. We currently offer the following denominations: Catholic, Anglican and Non Scripture classes. The school has been contacted with the request to investigate the possibility of offering Greek Orthodox Scripture in 2017. In order to determine if we will proceed with this request, we are asking for Expressions of Interest from families who may wish for their child to attend if a class were to be made available. Please complete the form below and return it to the office before the end of the term. Alternatively, you may wish to email the school at banksmeado-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au with the relevant details.
International Day for People With a Disability
Yesterday, Sunday 3rd December, was the International Day for People with a Disability. This day is celebrated around the world and is a chance to challenge myths, improve awareness and take positive action to change inclusion and accessibility for people with a disability. This Wednesday 7th December, we will be holding a special assembly in the school hall at 12:00pm. All parents and friends are invited to this event.
As part of our celebrations for the International Day for People with a Disability, students will be undertaking a number of activities throughout the week. These activities aim to give the students a deeper understanding and awareness for people who are living with disability.
Throughout the week, we will also being running a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to disability advocacy organisations. If you or your child would like to donate, please bring in a gold coin. These donations will be collected from classrooms throughout the week.
End of Year Activities - REPEAT
As the days are quickly flying by, we have begun to plan our end of year events. There will be many things happening at school, particularly in the last couple of weeks of term. Please include the following dates in your diary so that you don't miss out on any of them:
* Year 7 Orientation Day - Tuesday 6th December: Year 6 students attending public schools in 2017 should have received some information regarding this day from their enrolled high school
* Year 6 Day Out & Farewell - Wednesday 7th December: Year 6 will head to 'Attractivitiy' for some fun activities before returning to school later in the day for some more events. Please refer to previous notes sent home by Mr Murphy
* Presentation Day and Volunteer Morning Tea - The Presentation Day assembly will start at 9.15am in the hall on Friday 9th December. The school has sent a letter in the mail to parents whose children will be receiving an award on the day. The Hippopotamus Choir will be performing during the assembly and the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony will follow at the end. After the Presentation Day assembly, the school will be holding a thank you morning tea in the library for all our helpers and volunteers. Please come along if you have assisted the school in any way this year. This includes programs and events such as reading helpers, school banking , preparation for dance performances, Mother's Day and Father's Day stalls, Spartan event , assisting at sport, etc. Please note that this morning tea is for adults only (no school students should be in the Library).
* End of Year Concert - Our annual School concert will be held on Tuesday 13th December and will be split into two time slots to allow more room for the audience to be seated in the school hall. There will be a Kindergarten - Year 2 Concert at Midday. All classes in K-2 will be performing, as well as our Support Unit, and Junior and Senior dance groups. There will be a recess break between 1 and 1.20pm so that all these students and their parents who do not have older children may leave the hall area. The next concert will begin at around 1.20pm. All students in Years 3-6, as well as the Guitar groups (Junior, including the Year 2 guitar students, and Senior) and both dance groups will perform in the second concert. At the end of the concert the P&C will be drawing their Christmas raffle winners.
* End of Year Activity Day - Thursday 15th December: all students will participate in a range of fun activities. The students may wear mufti clothes to school on this day. A note with further information about each activity will be sent home soon.
* Talent Quest and Last day of 2016 - Some students will perform an item for the school to showcase their talents. This will also be the last day of school for all students in 2016.
