October 2022 Wildcats Newsletter
Message from Principal Sledge
Teachers and students are working hard to make sure we are reaching our goals this year. Students are expected to meet the benchmarks and projected growth targets from the Acadience test that was recently given, in addition to goals that display positive behavior. Students must achieve these goals by the end of the 2022-23 school year.
Our state report card shows improvement as we are rated one of the top three elementary schools in the district. However, we know that with more effort we know that we can be number one!
Therefore, it is important that we do everything possible at school and at home to achieve this. At home, we are asking that you have frequent conversations with your student about their experiences in their classroom, reach out to your child’s teacher more regularly and inquire about academic enrichment opportunities for your student.
Educationally yours,
Mr. Walter Sledge

Test Taking Tips!
As we approach testing season we encourage you to visit the below site for additional practice at home.
https://oh.portal.cambiumast.com/users/students-and-families.stml
Please remember these other test taking tips:
Get 9-11 hours of sleep the night before taking a test.
Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning and drink plenty of water.
Arrive at school on time.
Have a positive attitude and motto. (I’m giving it my best!)
Read all the directions and answer choices carefully before you pick the best answer.
Cross out and eliminate the answer choices you know are incorrect.
Don’t get stuck on the more challenging questions. Skip, move on, and return to them at the end.
Take a few deep breaths if you notice you are starting to lose your focus.
Review and check your work after you have answered all of the questions.

PBIS
Students are able to earn PBIS points throughout the school day. They can be earned for following our three school-wide rules; Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. They also get an attendance point for being here each day.
Students can use the points they have earned to "purchase" items in the classroom store each week. We also will be celebrating those students that follow the school-wide rules at the end of the quarter. On November 4th, students that have earned enough points will celebrate with an ice-cream and movie party!

Cat Values!
In October, we are focusing on being inclusive. Please discuss with your student at home what it means to be inclusive.
WE ARE:
Well- Rounded: someone who is skilled, capable, and knowledgable in a lot of different things.
Inclusive- An inclusive group or organization tries to include many different types of people and treat them all fairly and equally.

Girls Scouts! Talk it Out! Conflict Resolution
Counselor's Corner
This month's SEL Focus is on Bullying Prevention. Bullying has three parts to the definition 1. the behavior is meant to intentionally hurt someone, 2. the behavior doesn't happen just once it has to be repeated multiple times and 3. there needs to be a power difference.
Most of the time, the behaviors we see involve peer conflict, in which both students are involved. Students describe things as "bullying" when someone else simply does something they don't like. I will be focusing my lessons more on resolving conflict and how to talk to others respectfully to solve conflicts before they escalate to a bullying situation.

Staff Spotlight!
I graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1988 & Wright State University School of Nursing in 1998, with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- I worked in a hospital for most of my career until I came to work for SCSD as a school nurse. This is my 8th year in the district now, but my 1st year at Snyder Park Elementary. This school is amazing, I’ve never felt so welcomed & appreciated before. I thank you all for that!!
- I recently got married in February. So, you may see my old name (Smith) and my new name (Shuler) interchange on some documents and on my email.
- I have a soon to be 18-year-old son named Cody & he is currently a senior at CTC.
- I have two dogs (Lainey & Kali) and two cats (Mac & Cheeto).
- I enjoy cruising/off-roading in my Jeep, beach vacations and camping near an ocean or a lake. I also enjoy doing crafts and decorating.
- My favorite holidays are Halloween and Christmas, I will always be a big kid at heart.
