Nike Scout News March 2022
Check out what's happening at Nike
Greetings to all Nike Families,
March 1, 2022
Spring is in the air today. This is the time of year when we get to watch the Earth come back to life with the greens and vibrant colors blooming all around us. The warmth of the sun fills us with energy and enthusiasm to be outside. It is my goal to bring all of this color and energy into our work here at the school. Our Nike Elementary School Family – students, teachers, support staff, parents and community are an amazing group of people. We are not afraid of hard work or the challenging demands that come our way. A big SHOUT OUT to all parents and guardians who are working diligently with their children at home by setting aside a consistent homework time, listening to and making sure their child reads nightly, reviewing major concepts, and communicating frequently with the teacher. All of your efforts and parental involvement is a direct correlation to your child’s success, so again, we say thank you. We continue to seek your support and assistance with reminding your child of their role and responsibilities while in school.
We are seeing so much progress in our students. Their increase in capacity to accomplish their academic work and improve their decision-making skills in all areas is helping them find success. I am so proud of them. I am proud of the way they are treating one another, the way they are setting and meeting goals, the way they are willing to accept responsibility and the way they are problem solving both academically and socially. I feel like the proud parent of over 180 children. I hope that you know how much I care about your children, not just as students but also as the wonderful people that they are.
As we begin our third trimester…I know, can you even believe that we are almost three quarters of the way through this year, I want to encourage us all to carry on with the energy that spring will bring. We need to continue strong. It will take all of us to help our wonderful students to be able to show how far they have come this year. Carry on and enjoy the beauty that is all around us and especially in our wonderful students.
During this month of typically unpredictable weather, Nike students, faculty, and staff will again be practicing all of our drills, specifically tornado drills to ensure our students are aware and comfortable with our safety procedures. For some of our students, the thought of a tornado drill can be just as scary and intimidating as preparing for a real storm. Please help us by speaking with your child about the need for such drills and practices. Please remind them that the more we practice, the more prepared we will be if the need ever arises to activate our safety procedures. We will have a tornado drill on Tuesday, March 8th.
The deadline to purchase yearbooks has been extended to Monday, March 14th. Yearbooks are on sale for $9.00. Here is the link to purchase a yearbook: https://shop.yearbookmarket.com/nikeelementary
Please watch for information about exciting programs that will be showcasing the work the students have done this year and important testing dates.

Coins for our Community Update
Nike’s 4th grade leaders helped construct the banks and delivered to each classroom where they told their younger peers about donating to a community cause. They also explained what each project aimed to help with. Then they gathered the collection jars daily and counted the money collected. They displayed this data on a chart in the school common area. They learned about checks and balances in dealing with cash and doing deposits as well as charting and graphing results.
In total the school raised $ for the Franklin County Humane Society, which was a student selected cause. Part of this lesson included the idea of respecting others' views and choices. Therefore, a second cause was selected and involves the construction of a Little Free Pantry here at Nike Elementary. These little pantries are about the size of a dresser and are constructed outdoors where families can “take what they need or leave what they can”. This will provide additional food and household goods to those in need.
Mrs. Thompson’s class raised the most money for both causes. For each cause they raised just over $68.
After collecting and totaling the coins, the 4th grade Leaders for this project contacted the Franklin County Humane Society to present a check.

Nike Elementary School- Support Staff of the Year: Mrs. Misty Guenzler
Congratulations Mrs. Guenzler, the 2021-2022 Nike Elementary Support Staff of the Year.
"Mrs. Guenzler is responsible for making our morning announcement and writing our Tomahawk Tribune article. She always focuses on the positive. Mrs. Guenzler works with several groups of students to do interventions. She also fills in wherever she is needed and does it without complaining. She does it all: lunch duty, office support, interventions, subs, is an aide, and helps with tech support. She does all of this with a pleasant attitude. Misty is such a support to all staff. She is always willing to help wherever she can, and she has such a positive attitude that is contagious. Misty makes a difference in our district because she is there to support staff and students. Mark your calendars! The Spring Book Fair will be March 14th - March 18th ! More information will be coming home soon.
Both third and fourth grade have been doing a reader's theatre script of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. They have been working in small groups practicing their assigned parts. This has been a fun activity and helps practice reading out loud.
Second grade has been learning about using the dictionary. They have been finding words using the guide words and alphabetical order.
All the primary classes have finished reading our ten different Show Me Picture book nominees. In March we will be voting for Nike's favorite and that book will be announced soon. We also read some Dr. Seuss books in celebration of Read Across America. In March we will also be sharing books that have won the Caldecott Medal - an award for outstanding illustrations.
Physical Education
Students just finished their basketball unit and are moving forward into the hockey unit. This typically is one of the favorite units we do! Remember to have your child wear tennis shoes on their PE days.
Intramurals parents, with the latest snow and school cancelations outlet intramural schedule has once again changed. Intramurals will be every C & D day. I will get a new schedule printed out for students in the coming week.
