MASSACHUSETTS SCHOOL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION BOOKMARK CONTEST
I am happy to announce that Beckwith Middle School will be participating in the Massachusetts School Library Association (MSLA) Bookmark Contest. The theme for this year’s contest is “Every Story Matters”. (See below for some questions to guide students’ thinking about this theme.)
Bookmarks must be created on the official entry form, which will be available in the cafeteria and in the library. Students may use markers, crayons, pencils, or pens in their designs.
Ms. Faletra and I will select one bookmark for each of the following grade divisions: 5-6 and 7-8, to be submitted to the state competition. These two students will each receive a $10 gift certificate for the spring book fair. In order to be eligible for the state competition, the entry form MUST be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the library by TUESDAY, JANUARY 30.
The state-level winners in each division will receive:
An invitation to participate in the awards ceremony at author Jeff Kinney’s bookstore, An Unlikely Story, in Plainville, MA on Monday, April 29
A gift card to An Unlikely Story bookstore ($50 for 1st place, $25 for honorable mention)
Bookmarks of their design (50 for 1st place, 25 for honorable mention)
An enlargement of their bookmark
Although the contest is an optional activity, I do hope you will encourage your student to participate. It is a great opportunity for them to express their creativity and to highlight what they love about libraries. All submissions will be displayed throughout the library to showcase the students’ wonderful work.
If you have any questions about the contest, please feel free to contact me.
Mrs. Jill Fernandes, Beckwith Librarian
Theme-related questions:
What connections have you made between yourself and the stories you’ve read?
How have stories helped you learn about those who are different from you?
If you were writing a story about yourself, what might one of the pictures be?
How does the library help students to grow and learn?

YOU UPLIFT KINDNESS EWALL
The Kindness Task force brings you the YOU UPLIFT Kindness eWall. Students, staff and families will now be able to spread kindness and positive messages. Simply use this link, scroll to the bottom of the screen and submit your message. A staff member will approve all messages before they are displayed on our new Touchview (donated by the Rehoboth PTSA) in the cafeteria. It's that simple!
The Kindness Task Force looks forward to continuing to bring positivity within the Beckwith School Community!
HELPFUL CHROMEBOOK TIPS
Keep your Chromebook on a flat surface like a table or a desk. (Don't leave it on the floor where someone could step on it.)
Don't pile things on top of your Chromebook..
Keep the Chromebook in the case. Do not take it out of the case.
- Make sure there isn't anything on the keyboard when you close your Chromebook.
- Keep food and drinks away from your Chromebook and make sure your hands are clean. (Crumbs and liquids are very bad for your Chromebook and can cause it to stop working properly.)
- Be careful how you carry your Chromebook. Make sure your Chromebook is closed, always use two hands or zipper your case, and never carry your Chromebook by the screen or open case.
- Keep it charged fully at home. Plug it in when you are not using it so that it will be charged and ready when you need it.
- Tell your teacher right away if it breaks and report to the main office. Don't try to fix it yourself.
- Remember to take care of yourself online too. Stay on approved websites, keep your password private, and log off when you're done. Remember anything that happens under your account is your responsibility.

MYSCHOOLBUCKS INFORMATION
Account payments can be made through MySchoolBucks.com using a debit/credit card or electronic check. We will also be accepting cash and check payments (CHECK ONLY at Beckwith Middle) at all cafeteria registers. Please make checks payable to “Dighton Rehoboth Regional School District” and include your student’s full name in the memo line.
School meals are once again free (see above); however, all students must use the point of sale system to obtain a free lunch. Please encourage your child to remember their lunch pin number because it helps to move along the lunch lines. If a student forgets their pin, then the cafeteria workers need to look it up and this stalls the lunch line.
Students will need to pay for snacks not included with the free meal and this is the reason why a parent would want to put money on their child's account.

ABSENCE PROCEDURE AND NOTIFICATION SYSTEM FOR FAMILIES AND EMAIL ADDRESS
School attendance and punctuality are closely correlated with success at school. Time in class cannot be replicated by simply giving the absent student the work that was missed. Frequent absences can leave gaps in a student’s education that can affect them for years to come. For more information on Attendances and Absences, please review the Student Handbook.
Please call into the 24/7 Absence Line by the start of the school day (8:15 a.m.) to report your student's absence. Leave a message that states the name of your child and why they will be absent. To reach the absence line call 508-252-5080 and press 1. Alternatively, you may also email the Main Office at bmsattendance@drregional.org by 8:15 a.m. This email address can be used to report your student's absence as well as to report a tardy or dismissal.
Families of students who are marked as having an unexcused absence and who do not call the Absence Line or email the aforementioned email address by 8:15 a.m. will receive a phone call, text message, and email notification from the District to inform them of the student absence. The message will prompt families to call the Main Office to confirm the absence as soon as possible. The timing of the notification will be 9:15 a.m.
All absences are considered unexcused with the exception of the following: student medical appointment/illness/quarantine (with a doctor’s note), bereavement, family emergencies, observance of major religious holidays, weather so inclement as to endanger the health of the child, court appearance, out of school suspension, disability-related absences, and unique circumstances approved at the Principal’s discretion. In instances of chronic or irregular absence reportedly due to illness, the school administration may request a physician's statement certifying such absences to be justifiable.
Please arrange for doctor's notes to be sent to the Main Office via Fax Number at 508-252-5082 or via email at svincelette@drregional.org
