New Year, New Looks
Happy New Year!
December flew by so fast and break was amazing, but it's great to be back in school. We are hard at work making changes in the library. On my to-do list is a massive book order (includes audiobooks as well). If you have any recommendations or have heard from students their favorite books, please let me know!
Here is my senior homeroom on the last day before break and before tackling the famous book tree. Many wishes for happiness, health, and peace for the coming year from myself and all of them! (Don't tell them I sent this photo).

Genrefication - Spanish Books Moved
If you have been keeping up with library news, you'll know I've been working on genrefying the fiction section - along with a few nonfiction books. With the arrival of so many ELL students who speak Spanish, I've ordered a good amount of Spanish books. To help them and to help the many people who work in the library throughout the day (thank you to those who do!), I have separated the Spanish language books and moved them to the front of the library to the floating shelf in the entrance. It is a work in progress, but the left shelf is all fiction books, including graphic novels, and the right shelf is all nonfiction books. You can still find the list of Spanish language books on the library webpage as well - a good way to know if they are available or checked out. Please let me know feedback from you and from students as I continue the process of genrefying!
Elisa's Corner
For those who have been teaching for a while, you might have noticed a familiar face helping out in the library. Elisa Lynch is a LPMHS alum from 2016 and now helps with various library tasks. It's a good thing she loves to read! She has a few book recommendations that were her favorites from 2023, and I will be ordering them for the library. She is here on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 - 2:00 if you would like to visit. Read her reviews below!
The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson
This is a historical fiction novel that contains African - American history, a miscarriage, the hardships of black women, and sexual assault. Set in Philadelphia and Washington DC in the 1950's, Ruby hopes to be the first in her family to attend college, but a forbidden love affair makes that difficult. Ruby's story crosses with Eleanor's, who falls for someone whose family won't accept her. A fascinating story of lives changed that makes you think. Adult novel.
Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? by Crystal Smith Paul
When white movie star Kitty Karr Tat dies, she leaves her multimillions to the black St. John sisters. This leads to questions of her relationships to them. This story deals heavily with segregation and discrimination of black people in our history. Adult novel.
One of Us is Back by Karen McManus
This is the third and final book in the One of Us is Lying series. Ever since Simon dies in detention in the first book, life has been difficult for the Bayview Crew. This is a mystery thriller. It begins with a billboard hack, when a scary message warning that something is about to come out. I love the suspense, it has you sitting on the edge of your seat and it is very fast paced. Young adult novel.
