Digital Media Team
The Parkway Digital Media Team is making waves at The Pack! News waves that is! They have already published two editions of The Pack Press, Parkway Elementary’s digital newspaper. They enjoy conducting interviews, researching, and finding silly jokes to publish! You never know where you might see them around the Pine Tree area, so be ready for an interview!
GOOD TIMES
Mrs. Fobell’s class has been working hard to gear up for their Special Olympics bowling. They have been practicing every Thursday. They have been getting better and better every day. We are all so very proud of their hard work and dedication to the sport.
Last week, Mrs. Fobell’s class had some fun in the sun. The students enjoyed all the animals at the zoo. On Wednesday, they had a picnic and had fun at Kidsview. Our students are having a good time learning and enjoying each other's company.
OCTOBER PIRATES OF THE MONTH
1st Grade: Harrison Howard from Mrs. Clay
2nd Grade: Kingston Bowen from Mrs. Russell
3rd Grade: Dayton McClain from Mrs. Richardson
4th Grade: Cooper Estes from Mrs. Campbell
JUNIOR HIGH
Our Junior High Football teams have been hard at work this season. Specifically, our 7th Grade team has dominated our district matches each week! Led by Quarterback Matthew Carter and top playmakers Jakaiden Johnson and D’ayden Ingram, our Pirates are well on their way to a district championship. Hats off to Coach Kirkpatrick and his crew!
PTISD had a tremendous National Night Out on Tuesday, October 3rd. Many of our students and parents joined us around town for hotdogs, games, face painting, and performances from around the district. It was an excellent community event that once again illustrates what sets PTISD apart from every other district!
With football season well underway, it’s also time for our campus pep rallies! We have had a few under our belt now and each one has been more exciting and fun than the last. It’s wonderful to see our school comes together with our parents, band, color guard, cheerleaders, and our pre-drill team to celebrate having Pirated Pride! We have one more pep rally scheduled for Tuesday, October 17th at 3:30pm with special guests Parkway Precision Dance Team!
BIRCH ELEMENTARY
At Birch Elementary, we do more before 8 a.m. than most schools do all day! Each morning, students excitedly scurry to our front office to share a jolly Birch First cheer and lead the entire campus in morning announcements. As they confidently share the pledges and daily lunch menus, children all across our campus listen with anticipation. Moments like these are what makes our Birch First family a force to be reckoned with.
Our Birch First PE program has been accomplishing new goals left and right during this busy school year through our Birch First Mile Club. All grade levels have been increasing their endurance for long distance running during their time with Coach Strawbridge and Coach Daniels. First grade has achieved a distance of 466 miles. Second grade has crushed 410.75 miles. Third grade has conquered 403 miles. Fourth grade has executed 401 miles. This brings our grand total of miles galloped by our Birch First students to 1,680.75 miles. This is the approximate distance from Longview, Texas to San Francisco, California. It appears that we may have some future Olympians coming from our Birch First campus!
Our fearless leader, Mr. Stuard, continually challenges our students to strive for phenomenal attendance. Recently, he rewarded the third grade students with a bounce house celebration during their PE times as they accomplished 97% attendance for the month of September. Mr. Stuard may or may not have been seen doing acrobatic stunts in the bounce house as he rejoiced in their success. Third grade has the highest attendance rate at Birch and we are thrilled to reward their victory!
Hungry for a bit of a sweet treat? Looking for ways to spend your extra money? We welcome you to contribute to our Birch First fall fundraiser! Our precious Birch First kids are working tirelessly to sell cookies, plump morsels, and candy products through the Big Kahuna fundraising program. Simply grab $2 and find a Birch First pirate to enjoy a tasty snack and support our school!
EXCEL
When selecting the Pirate of the Month for September, ExCEL staff looked for the student that most demonstrated excellence inside and outside of the classroom. Along with that criteria, the student had to show respect not only to staff but also to fellow students and show exemplary character. Congratulations to Khailaun Thomas who was elected ExCEL's Pirate of the Month for September!
Khailaun came to ExCEL this school year. He was doing well in the traditional classroom setting but he says he came to ExCEL to "get a jump start" on his future by graduating early. . Outside of his schoolwork, he holds a part-time job at McAllister's.
He describes himself as always being full of joy. That is one reason why ExCEL teacher, Jennifer Wilbur, selected him. "Khailaun always has a smile on his face, even when you see him in the hallway," she said. Khailaun says he really loves being able to make people smile and laugh. It is important to him to be able to do that.
Khailaun plans to become a firefighter after graduation. He is currently training in the fire academy offered by Kilgore College. It is his mom who inspires him to be successful. His mom has had health problems for as long as he can remember and he wants to be able to take care of her. She inspires him by her determination to take care of him and his younger sister as best as she can despite her health problems. "She just keeps going," he said.
HIGH SCHOOL
The end of the first nine weeks happens this week - so students and staff will have completed one quarter of the school year when this week ends. It is amazing how fast the year has gone thus far, although there is still a lot of work left to occur.
Here at Pine Tree High School, band, choir and other groups such as debate are already fully involved in competition season, and the school has seen a lot of success thus far and is expecting more. UIL Academics joins the fray now, and that is an area where Pine Tree is really expected to shine this year. Thanks to Lee Branson and Terri Davis and a host of coaches who have bought in to having a successful program, Pine Tree is poised to return to a level of acclaim this year that has not been seen in over a decade. Many programs are ready to not only win district championships but to move even farther into the victory column.
In sports, volleyball is still hanging on to playoff hopes with five or six games remaining, while football has a fairly good shot at returning to the playoffs after a two year absence. Cross country, both boys and girls, has district meets this week in Mount Pleasant, and both are expected to send full teams to regionals and beyond. Tennis and golf are also competing in fall events, and just around the corner is basketball, soccer and powerlifting.
PSAT is coming up at Pine Tree High School for a host of juniors, while seniors are taking SAT and ACT tests preparing for college admission.
Classes are going full steam here at the high school, and there is a host of activities, programs and projects that are occurring on a daily basis. The staff at Pine Tree this year is making the effort to not only teach students but have them do hands-on projects which drive home the lesson and gives the student a visual as well as a book-related knowledge.
Plays are getting ready to be unveiled in November, and Skills USA is ready to jump on a good number of projects that will culminate with them taking students to a state or national competition in the spring.
Senior parents can now purchase yearbook ads for their students by contacting Mr. Collins in Room 612. Parents for all grades can now start purchasing yearbooks which will be distributed in May.
Fall Fest is October 28 at Pine Tree stadium. The BUCS have an event the first Wednesday of every month to allow students to pledge to not bully others on campus and in their community. This program is in its fifth year and continues to be an asset to the high school where bullying, both physical and cyber bullying, is a problem that students deal with on a regular basis.
Both PT Cheer and Precision Drill team have held camps this year, and those young people have had a wonderful time interacting with high school cheerleaders and drill team personnel while getting a first-hand knowledge of what it will be like to be part of those teams when they are in high school.
Culinary has been very busy with projects and will have several nutritional days coming up before Christmas to showcase their talents to the entire campus, not to mention that they have been feeding the dignitaries in the press box before and during home football games this season.
MIDDLE
On Thursday, October 5th, 16 students from Pine Tree Middle School TAME Club (Texas Alliance for Minority in Engineering) attended the 2023 TAME Kick-off competition at Region 7. The theme for this year is “Equitable Access to Safe Food”
As part of the launch, students played the role of food engineers and worked with their teams to build a prototype of a device to preserve food (cooler or other food storage device). Each team had a budget and had to purchase materials to build their prototype.
Students who participated are: Amelia Arnett, Jeyland Dies, Riley Donaldson, Tucker Fairman, Jade Goodloe, Indie Gray, Olivia Guerra, Carter Hall, Hannah Holder, Kahlan Martinez, Brenna Mettler, Sheldon Smith, Hunter Watlington, Clara White, Deacon White and Cheyenne Willis. The club sponsor is Melina Moore and the co-sponsor is Amy Streetman.
The Middle School hosted a Career Night with students displaying their dream career. Many students dressed up and outlined their plans, with costs, and requirements of each career. Pictured below is Olivia Guerra who would like to be a stewardess for an airline and Bailee who hopes to be a pediatrician. Several fifth graders are planning to be doctors, teachers and lawyers in Mrs. Verden’s class.
Our students are excited about Fall Fest and our upcoming CBA’s. They are ready to show off their hard work. Our campus will host a Fine Arts Festival the last week of October for our parents to enjoy so watch for more news about that event coming soon.
PACE
PACE recognized our outstanding custodians during National Custodian Day on October 2nd! Thank you, Cathey Taylor and Tyrin Mack, for all you do at our PACE campus!

PRIMARY - CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHT - BOZARTH
In Mrs. Bozarth’s class we are learning so many things! In writing, we are learning to stretch our words and write them. In Math, we are learning to add and subtract, as well as to understand concepts such as one more, one less, greater than, and less than. This week also begins our Benchmark testing in Reading. We are also learning about our emotions and how to make good choices with Mr. Robert from TGFD with Wellness Pointe.
CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHT - CARTER
Mrs. Carter’s class is currently working on learning their letters and sounds! They sing songs, build anchor charts, and graph whether or not the letter of the week is in their name! They have also been focusing on feelings and emotions, and how they can control their own emotions in different situations.
Mrs. Carter’s goal is for every student to feel loved and safe in her classroom!
PRIMARY OPEN HOUSE
PTP had an amazing turnout for our first open house. Parents visited classrooms and went on a scavenger hunt with their students. Also, our Fall Book Fair was a hit!
We had several volunteers come help throughout the week and staff stepped up to help during Grandparent’s Day and Open House.
