Public Speaking in the Workplace
Students enrolled in Mrs. Kallis’s Public Speaking CP class recently participated in a special opportunity to practice their public speaking skillset by welcoming their selected guests for the third annual “Public Speaking in the Workplace” gathering. Each student chose one honored guest to attend the presentation; this year’s guests included family members, friends, and high school administrators. Students worked diligently before the arrival of their guests to create a pleasant environment for the event by decorating their classroom and offering an assortment of delicious foods.
After receiving the rubric for their required speech, crafting their written work, and practicing in front of their classmates, the students had the opportunity to introduce themselves to an audience comprised of not only their peers but also adults who represented a wide variety of careers. Following a personal introduction, each student announced his or her guest by providing an overview of why this particular person received an invitation. Guests then addressed responsibilities within their careers and how refined public speaking skills enhance their ability to perform their tasks, interact well with others, and earn promotions. Additionally, they provided their own strategies for lessening the anxiety that most feel when compelled to speak in front of an audience.
The event was received well by everyone in attendance. Student Giuliana Santangelo shared, “My dad had nothing but good things to say. He loved coming to my school and I enjoyed having him.” Elita Bogdanova’s guest, State Representative David Maloney, attended for the second year and shared the importance of being passionate and sincere in speaking with others. Erin Day’s guest, her father Lou Day, emphasized the importance of the speaker being not only interesting but also genuinely interested in the well-being of others. Erin stated, “My father honestly really liked presenting and listening to all of the other speakers. He thought it was a cool and meaningful experience.” Mr. Day’s presentation impacted student Brady Kemp who remarked, “I really enjoyed hearing all of the people that were able to come to make it such a great time. My favorite guest was Lou. He was very enthusiastic in what he was talking about, and he really kept me engaged.”
Brian Tracy, Canadian-American motivational public speaker and self-development author, asserts, “Your ability to communicate with others will account for fully 85% of your success in your business and in your life.” This event provided an excellent opportunity for everyone involved. Thank you to every attendee – administrator, teacher, student, family member, friend – who played an integral role in the tremendous success of “Public Speaking in the Workplace.”
Oley Valley FFA’s Apple Pies and Blue Skies
Every year the Oley Valley community holds a fair at the Oley Fairgrounds. All members enjoy going to the fair with friends, or to compete, but the FFA also has the Farmer For A Day Tent run by FFA members. This year we had many activities including the Grocer game, the Farmer For a Day activity, learning how to milk a cow, and we also brought animals with us. We enjoyed watching the kids learn about where their food comes from and how hard farmers work to provide us with our daily needs. They were also able to pet many different breeds of rabbits. Not only do we have the Farmer For A Day tent, but we also had our two display boards there as well. The Fun In The Sun; A Homegrown Production is a great way for people to see how the plants grow and the process happening inside the plant. Our Lab-Grown meat board is also very informational; this board explains the process of lab-grown meat and what it really means to be “lab grown.” While we had members working the tent and other members enjoying the fair, there were several students who showed their animals; Leah Walters won many awards with her goats including High Point Goat Exhibitor; Emma Xander won Youth Supreme Champion Dairy Heifer; and many other members competed as well. This year we also had four seniors win the Marcy A.T. Henderson Memorial Award, we are so proud of these four students and all of their accomplishments. This year we also entered a hay bale into the hay bale decorating contest! Our bale looked great, thank you to the students who worked on it. We are so proud of all of our members and grateful for their hard work during the fair. We miss it already but are looking forward to next year.
OVHS Public Speaking CP Class Visits KU
On Thursday, October 26th, students enrolled in Mrs. Kallis’s Public Speaking CP class visited Kutztown University to participate in a college-level public speaking class. The idea for the field trip was put into motion when Mrs. Kallis contacted Abigail Cosgrove, an admissions recruiter for KU. Cosgrove and Dr. Emily Cripe, Chair for the Department of Communication Studies, approached Dr. Megan O’Byrne with the request for a classroom visitation, and Dr. O’Byrne enthusiastically welcomed Oley Valley High School students into her classroom.
Upon entering the classroom, OVHS students were greeted by Dr. O’Byrne, who had prepared for the students’ arrival in advance by placing notecards on selected desks around her classroom. OVHS students chose from the seats with notecards and scattered throughout the class. As college students entered, everyone engaged in pleasant conversation. Dr. O’Byrne opened her class with a question of the day for all students to respond to – including the OVHS students. She continued the lesson with a discussion on communication in small groups and then placed the students into small groups with each containing at least one OVHS student. Each team was tasked with completing an engaging activity. To conclude the class, the college students explained to the high school students that they were preparing a speech addressing any policy they would like to see changed. OVHS students readily participated and shared their own ideas. When the students were dismissed, Dr. O’Byrne provided each of the high school students and Mrs. Kallis with a gift bag filled with KU items and literature on the university and all that it has to offer.
Following the class, OVHS students were taken on a tour of the beautiful campus. At the conclusion of the tour, students were treated to a delicious buffet lunch at the KU cafeteria.
Engaging in a reflection writing piece after the visitation, OVHS students had insightful comments about the field trip. Lexy Keppel commented, “I really enjoyed being able to experience a college classroom setting since I’m going to college next year.” Brady Kemp wrote, “It was surprising because our high school class and the college class are very alike. We learn the same things and do similar activities as the college students. The campus for Kutztown is very capacious and has lots of activities for the students. The food there is really good!” Elita Bogdanova remarked, “I found it interesting how accepting the college kids were of us high school kids in their class.” “This was definitely one of the best college tours I’ve ever done. The people were really nice, and the food was really good too. I loved the classroom environment. We all had a lot of fun and a really good time,” observed Tayla Batchelder.
Thank you to all of the Kutztown University faculty and staff members who made this such a valuable and enjoyable experience. Also, thank you to the Oley Valley School District School Board members and the top-notch administrative team who are always so supportive of the tremendous opportunities that OVHS provides. GO LYNX!
