SMS Weekly Update

We hope this newsletter finds you well and full of excitement as we kick off Sherwood Middle School's "Celebrate" month. Each newsletter throughout November will highlight various themes that are worth celebrating about our school. It's a special time to recognize and appreciate the achievements, talents, and positive aspects of our school community. We look forward to sharing stories, accomplishments, and moments that make our school a wonderful place for students, teachers, and families to thrive.

In this edition, we are thrilled to share stories that exemplify resilience, innovation, and excellence at Sherwood Middle School. Our students continue to excel in various aspects of their school life, and we couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments. Join us in recognizing the hard work and enthusiasm of our students as they make the Sherwood community proud. Our students shine beyond academic milestones and dazzling performances. From some amazing student led events to the personalities that beam though our choices of Flex and clubs, this newsletter is filled with stories that showcase the remarkable talents and dedication of our students. Let's come together to applaud their achievements and inspire them to reach even greater heights. Thank you for being a part of our supportive Sherwood family. Our Student of the Month program continues to grow. This month we were able to celebrate nearly 30 students who were selected by their teachers and other adults in the building for demonstrating excellent communication. This program will continue throughout the year with a focus on a different character trait or theme each month.

Over the last few weeks you have seen some of the highlights from our Flex options. During our Flex period we have a chance to create academic interventions and extensions for students in addition to designing fun opportunities and clubs for students to enjoy. Among the clubs we offer are Table Top Gaming, Builder's Club, SAGA, and Archer Industries.

Archer Industries is a leading Research and Development facility located within Sherwood Middle School. In addition to investing in the future of our employees, we create top-tier products that are designed within our building. We offer two entrepreneurial engineering courses for our employees. In How to Code Almost Anything students learn block and text based coding. In How to Make Almost Anything students learn to rapid prototype with a vinyl cutter, laser cutter, 3D printer, and a micro:bit microcontroller. Our products are sold at the Archer Industries School Store on Tuesdays from 8:30-8:40. More information about Archer Industries can be found at: https://archerindustries.org/.

Student Leadership is an incredible opportunity here at SMS. Our student leaders are involved in numerous events and activities around our campus. Leadership designs and organizes many of our events and assemblies including grade level competitions, spirit weeks, the high school homecoming parade, organizing our student vs. staff games, the annual Veterans Day Breakfast, and they develop fun opportunities for students to enjoy during the year!

Throughout the school year our students decide on and participate in Spirit Week dress up days. Recently we enjoyed our first spirit week of the school year. While the dress up days are always fun we tried a new one this year that turned out to be a hit: Student / Teacher swap day. Students had the opportunity to dress like teachers, and teachers dressed like students.

In partnership with the Elks our Leadership classes will be holding a Food Drive in November and a Toy Drive in December. More information will be coming about these as they get closer, however it's never too early to celebrate the amazing ways that our students give back to their community.

Our Life Skills classroom has created an amazing opportunity for students to gain new insights and experiences. We have opened up our Life Skills program to allow for student mentors to spend one of their elective periods working with, and in support of, their peers. The students are building strong relationships and developing skills that will help them benefit their greater community as they get older.

The SMS Band Program is in full swing for the school year, with the highest enrollment we've ever had! We're so excited to offer such a robust music education program for all of our 6th-8th grade students. This year, our 7th/8th grade students in the Advanced Band have been invited to perform at the coveted Oregon Music Educators Association All-State Conference in Eugene. We're so proud of the work our students are doing, and are grateful that we can Celebrate Sherwood Schools on a state-wide stage in January!

Sherwood Middle School Leadership's class is inviting you to celebrate a Veteran in your life. On Thursday, November 9th, we will host our annual Veterans Day Breakfast to recognize and celebrate those who have served in our Armed Forces.

If your student is performing with the SMS band or choir during this event, you are welcome to come view the performance. The program will start at 8:45 am. Doors will open for the students and Veterans at 8:15 am. Please enter through the Activities Entrance on the side of the building.

SMS will hold a Food Drive beginning, Monday, November 13-Friday, November 17. Students will earn points for their Flight Time class by bringing in items from the daily category. Please do not bring perishable items or open containers. All items will be donated to the Sherwood Elks and will support local families in need.

It's that time of the year again for our annual County required Immunization Review. Monthly reminder letters are now be mailed out to families whose students are missing immunizations. Please see the information below for more details on important dates from the County. If you have any questions please reach out to our Registrar, Allison Kopp, at akopp@sherwood.k12.or.us or 503-825-5520.

2/7/24 Exclusion letters from the state will be mailed to students who are still out of compliance.

2/21/24 Exclusion Day - All students out of compliance are not able to attend school until their required Immunizations are up to date or the exemptions have been completed.

Medical and nonmedical exemptions are also allowed.

• To request a medical exemption from vaccine requirements, submit a signed statement from your child's physician.
• To request a nonmedical exemption from vaccine requirements, you must do one of the following: (1) Talk to your healthcare provider and get a signed Vaccine Education Certificate, fill out the nonmedical exemption section of the Certificate of Immunization Status, and turn in both forms to your child's school; or (2) Watch the Vaccine Education Module for parents at: https://www.oregon.gov/OHA/PH/PreventionWellness/VaccinesImmunization/GettingImmunized/Pages/non-medical-exemption.aspx and print out the Vaccine Education Certificate at the end of the module, fill out the nonmedical exemption section of the Certificate of Immunization Status, and turn in both forms to your child's school.
