Soil Amending
Vegetable Garden Ministry Description
"The vegetable garden at the north end of the church campus is planted, maintained and harvested by a team of dedicated volunteers. This team also helps maintain an attractive appearance of the grounds surrounding the garden. A portion of the harvest is donated to parishioners."

Meeting Highlights
The Garden Ministry met on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 5:20 until 6:09 PM
Board Members in attendance: Ofel, Mike and Mary
Gardening Members in attendance: Jonie, Phyllis, and Helen
- A motion was passed to allow for capital expenditures for the purpose of amending the garden soil and enhancing the water system.
- Discussion of what should be planted in the fall garden included brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, garlic, beets and radishes. A cover crop of rye or Elbin grass for the majority of the garden was discussed as well.
- The question of tilling was addressed with both pros and cons being considered. No conclusion was reached since there are benefits and detriments either way. Nitrogen is lost with too much tilling but the soil needs to be softened somehow. A repeat from the previous meeting was made requesting clean leaves for the garden, devoid of wire, broken glass and such.
- Ideas were generated on how to entice teenagers to come assist with the amending of the garden soil. Community service hours could be earned. Groups to ask for help include the Youth Ministry, Confirmation candidates, Environmental programs at local high schools, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
- With the rain, even more ant hills are popping up. The garden has been given organic ant killer that can last up to 250 days. Discussion centered on whether the ant bait should be sprinkled on individual mounds or broadcast over the entire garden.
