Free and Reduced Meal Applications
Iowa-Grant School District is participating in the USDA Seamless Summer Option (SSO) for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year. This means that our school is providing FREE meals to all students! This program provides additional support and flexibility for our district to continue serving meals to children while maintaining safety measures and managing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though receipt of free meals does not depend on an approved free and reduced-price meal application, we are still distributing and processing them so Iowa-Grant families may qualify for P-EBT benefits as well as other school funding.
When your child participates in our healthy and delicious school meals program it will save your family time and money. At breakfast, all children are offered at least four food items from three food components (grain, fruit, and fluid milk). For your child's breakfast to be free, they must take at least three food items, one of which is 1/2 cup fruit or vegetable. For your child's lunch meal to be free, they must take at least three different food components, one of which is 1/2 cup fruit or vegetable. Second meals, a la carte items, milk only, or meals that do not meet the requirements described above will be charged a fee.
Please contact me with any questions at (608) 943-6311, extension 3013, or email me at bhugill@igs.k12.wi.us.

Message from Mrs. Bast
Dear Panther Families,
I recently purchased a beautiful picture book written by a local author, Lydia M. Sigwarth, which I am excited to share with my students in the IGEMS Library this fall.
Have you read Dear Librarian? The following is a summary of the book as provided by Macmillan Publishers:
When Lydia was five years old, she and her family had to leave their home. They hopped from Grandma's house to Aunt Linda's house to Cousin Alice's house, but no place was permanent. Then one day, everything changed. Lydia's mom took her to a new place — not a house, but a big building with stone columns, and tall, tall steps. The library.
In the library, Lydia found her special spot across from the sunny window, at a round desk. For behind that desk was her new friend, the librarian. Together, Lydia and the librarian discovered a world beyond their walls, one that sparkled with spectacular joy.
Paired with warm art by newcomer Romina Galotta and a foreword by Ira Glass, Dear Librarian is a “thank you” to anyone who has offered a child love and support during a difficult time.
Lydia Sigwarth tells a lovely story about the impact libraries and librarians can have in their community. Additionally, this book is a reminder to be kind and empathetic to everyone you meet, because you never know the challenges they may be experiencing. The afterword provides information about homelessness and the true story behind the book, including a picture of the recent reunion between Lydia and the children’s librarian in Dubuque, Iowa who provided a safe haven for her family at a time when it was needed. If I weren’t already a librarian, this book would certainly inspire me to become one!
I hope you are inspired to visit your local library and get to know the wonderful people who are there serving you and your community:
Betty Schambow & Assistant: Mary Sue Divine-Allen-Dietzman Public Library in Livingston
Linda Gard & Assistants: Karen Fisher and Mariah Flanagan-Cobb Public Library
Marcie Harwick & Assistant: Jessica Hrubes-Montfort Public Library
Work hard, be kind, and keep reading, Panthers!

Community Pen Pals
This year's 3rd-grade class, Class of 2031, needs your help! We are looking for pen pals! Instead of looking for pen pals our age, we are looking for pen pals that are older and wiser! Maybe you attended a one-room schoolhouse, and walked to school “uphill both ways.” We would like pen pals who are of retirement age who are willing to share their experiences, especially what life was like when they were 8 and 9 years old. Ideally, we would like to pair up each older and wiser adult with 1 or 2 students. (We will have approximately 50 third grade students this year!)
Since we will be learning cursive this year, we would like to have our pen pals write to us using their best cursive! We hope to respond in cursive around Christmas time. We are hoping to exchange 9 letters throughout the year. We envision having a meet-and-greet with our pen pals. We are hoping to have one in the fall and one in the spring. (Due to Covid-19, this may or may not happen.). More details will be mailed to our pen pals once our list is set.
If you are interested, please email Mrs. Rogstad at jrogstad@igs.k12.wi.us with your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email (if you have one). Please put pen pal project as the subject. If you are not able to email, call IGEMS at 608-943-6313 and give your information to the secretary. Ask her to email the info to Jen Rogstad, 3rd-grade teacher, for our pen pal project.
