Future Teachers Show Appreciation for Their Own Teachers

February 7-11 was Educators Rising Week. EdRising is a two-year program for grades 10-12 approved by the Arkansas Department of Education to help high school students prepare for a possible career as a teacher. Students learn about the history of US education, presentation skills, curriculum standards, lesson planning, teacher evaluation, educational technology and more. The cost of EdRising is currently covered for select schools, like Searcy High School, by a grant from the Walton Foundation. Students celebrated EdRising Week by making cards of appreciation for Searcy teachers who have impacted their lives.

Fran Key taught first grade at Westside before she passed away in 2004 at the age of 55. Her Class of 1998 first graders performed a campus beautification project planting Bradford Pear trees along Driveway 1 on Country Club Road. The dedication sign deteriorated over the years, so volunteers created a new one and Westside held a rededication ceremony with Mrs. Key's daughter, Sally Key Brown, in attendance. Former colleagues, students, and retired administrator Doug Langston were in attendance for the ceremony.
